※ Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev {Mendeleyev or Mendeleef}(1834~1907, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dmitri_Mendeleev ) ; a Russian chemist known for formulating the periodic law and creating a version of the periodic table of elements.
He used the periodic law not only to correct the then-accepted properties of some known elements, such as the valence and atomic weight of uranium, but also to predict the properties of three elements that were yet to be discovered (germanium, gallium, and scandium).
The synthetic element Mendelevium is named in his honor.

What did people truly want to say to the world?
I want to convey the true heart of the person published here.
With this mindset, I hope to properly express Dmitri Mendeleev's heart.
1. Future is a today. Here, there is no tomorrow.
미래는 오늘이다. 그래서 내일이란 없다.
2. There is nothing in this world that I fear to say.
이 세상에 내가 말하기 두려운 것은 아무것도 없다.
3. Work, look for peace and calm in work : you will find it nowhere else.
일하라. 일에서 평화와 평온을 찾으라.
다른 곳에서는 찾을 수 없을 것이다.
4. When dying she said, ‘Refrain from illusions, insist on work and not on words.
Patiently search divine and scientific truth.
나의 어머니는 돌아가시면서 이런 말을 남겼다.
쓸데 없는 망상을 하지 말라.
말에 의지하지 말고 일(연구)에 의지하라.
인내하며 신성하고 과학적인 연구에 진실하게 매달려라.
5. We could live at the present day without a Plato, but a double number of Newtons is required to discover the secrets of nature, and bring life into harmony with the laws of nature.
우리는 플라톤( https://jc2588.tistory.com/501 )의 철학 없이도 살아갈 수 있다.
그러나 뉴턴과 같은 과학자들이 많이 나와서 자연의 비밀을 캐는 게 필요한 시대이며, 그리고 우리네 인생과 자연의 법칙을 조화롭게 운영할 수 있어야 한다.
6. There exists everywhere a medium in things, determined by equlilbrium.
The Russian proverb says, ‘Too much salt or too little salt is alike an evil.’
It is the same in political and social relations…
사물(자연, 우주)의 모든 곳에는 세력균형으로 결정되는 중용이 존재한다.
러시아 격언에 이런 말이 있다.
소금을 지나치게 많이 쓰는 것도, 너무 적게 쓰는 것도 모두 안 좋다.
정치와 사회 관계 등에서도 마찬가지다.
7. It is the function of science to discover the existence of a general reign of order in nature and to find the cause governing this order.
And this refers in equal measure to the relations of man-social and political-and to the entire universe as a whole.
과학의 기능이란 자연에 존재하는 질서의 일반적인 영역을 발견하고, 이 질서를 이루는 이유(원인)가 무엇인지를 알아내는 일이다.
이것은 사회적이든 정치적이든 모든 인간관계에도 똑 같이 적용되며, 나아가서 우주의 영역에 까지도 적용된다.

자연의 법칙은 단 한 번으로 만들어지는 게 아니다.
수많은 시행착오를 거친 후에 자연의 법칙을 터득할 수 있다.
더구나 법칙의 성립은 사고력(思考力)만으로 되는 것도 아니고, 그렇다고 중요성을 인식했다고 해서 되는 것만도 아니다.
9. I have achieved an inner freedom.
There is nothing in this world that I fear to say.
No one nor anything can silence me.
This is a good feeling. This is the feeling of a man.
I want you to have this feeling too ;
it is my moral responsibility to help you achieve this inner freedom.
나는 마음 속의 자유를 얻었다.
두려워서 말 못할 것은 세상에 아무 것도 없다.
어느 누구도, 또 그 어떤 것도 나를 침묵시킬 수는 없다.
아주 좋은 느낌이다. 인간다움이란 느낌이다.
당신도 이런 느낌을 가졌으면 한다.

10. I am an evolutionist of a peaceful type.
Proceed in a logical and systematic manner.
Work, look for a peace and calm in work :
you will find it nowhere else.
Pleasures flit by - they are only for yourself ; work leaves a mark of long and lasting joy, work is for others.
나는 평화적인 타입의 진화론자다.
논리적이고 체계적인 방법으로 진행시켜라.
일하며 평화를 추구하고, 일 속에서 평온을 찾아라.
다른 곳에서는 찾을 수가 없다.
스쳐가는 행복들, 그것은 당신을 위한 것이다.
연구는 길고 영원한 기쁨을 남긴다.
그러나 그 연구는 인류를 위한 노력이어야만 한다.
