※ Antonie Philips van Leeuwenhoek (1632~1723, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antonie_van_Leeuwenhoek ) ; 17세기~18세기초 과학 기술의 황금 시대의 네덜란드 미생물학자, 현미경 학자(Dutch microbiologist and microscopist in the Golden Age of Dutch science and technology)이다.

그는 현미경(the Father of Microbiology)을 발명하였으며 또한 근육 섬유, 박테리아, 정자, 적혈구, 통풍성 결절의 결정체(muscle fibers, bacteria, spermatozoa, red blood cells, crystals in gouty tophi)에 대한 현미경 관찰을 처음으로 문서화했으며 모세혈관(capillaries)에서 혈류를 관찰한 최초의 사람 중 한 사람이다.

With this mindset, I hope to properly express Antonie van Leeuwenhoek's heart.

자연에 대한 우리의 많은 상상과 조사(調査) 결과 쓸데없는 것이 많다.

2. How inscrutable and incomprehensible are the hidden works of Nature!

자연의 숨겨진 작품들은 정말로 불가해(不可解)하고 이해하기 어렵다.

3. Man has always to be busy with thoughts if anything is to be accomplished.

무언가를 성취하려면 모름지기 늘 생각에 생각을 거듭해야 한다.

4. In the year of 1657, I discovered very small living creatures in rain water, surprising!

1657년 나는 현미경을 통해 빗물 속에서 미생물들을 발견했는데, 정말 놀랐다.

5. My work, which I’ve done for a long time, was not pursued in order to gain the praise I now enjoy, but chiefly from a craving after knowledge.

술잔을 아무리 깨끗이 씻는다 해도 아주 많은 미생물들이 유리잔에 달라붙어서 그 중 일부가 우리 입 속으로 들어온다는 걸 누가 과연 알기나 할까?

9. I have divers times endeavoured to see and to know, what parts the Blood consists of ; and at length I have observ’d, taking some Blood out of my own hand, that it consists of small round globuls driven through a Crystalline humidity or water.
