그는 아메리카 대륙의 개미 종을 거의 탐색했으며, 페로몬(pheromone)의 작용을 최초로 분석한 개미 연구의 세계적 권위자이다.

퓰리처상을 2회 수상한 그는 생물학으로 사회성 동물의 사회현상을 설명할 수 있다며 '사회생물학 sociobiology'을 주장했다.

sociobiology 주장을 인간에 적용한 게 그의 책 '인간 본성에 대하여 On Human Nature'이다.

그의 'sociobiology'는 학계에 유례없는 논란을 불러왔다.

그의 생각은 학문들이 옆 학문에 쌓은 담을 헐고 같이 연구해야 하며, 생물학이 그 중심에 설 수 있다는 '통섭(Consilience)'으로 확대되었다.

'바이오필리아'란 'Bio(생명)'와 'philia(좋아함)'의 조합어로, 인간의 본성 속에 이 '생명 사랑'의 경향이 내재되어 있어, 우리가 하는 선택과 행동에 아주 강력하게 영향을 준다고 그는 주장한다.

그는 우리 인간만이 종으로서 자기 행동에 책임질 수 있으며, 인류의 유일한 고향인 지구를 파괴하는 일을 중단해야 하고, HIPPO로 일어나는 지구 규모의 변화를 완화시켜야 한다고 했다.
