1989년에 발암성 레트로바이러스에 관한 연구로 존 마이클 비숍(John Michael Bishop)과 함께 노벨 생리의학상(Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine)을 수상했다.
제14대 미국 국립 보건원(National Institutes of Health) 원장으로 1993년부터 1999년까지 역임했다.
그는 오랜 기간 발암성 레트로바이러스(retrovirus)와 암에 관한 연구를 해 오면서 암의 발생 기원이 세포 내의 종양 유전자(腫瘍 遺傳子, retroviral oncogenes)에 있다는 것을 밝혀 이후 암을 이해하고 치료적으로 접근하는데 큰 공헌을 하였다.
캘리포니아 대학에서 그가 한 거의 대부분의 연구는 Michael Bishop과 함께 진행되었다.
바머스와 비숍의 가장 큰 발견은 암을 유발하는 바이러스인 라우스 육종 바이러스(Rous Sarcoma Virus)의 유전자 c-src와 v-src의 발견이다.
이 연구는 다른 수많은 암 유발 바이러스 유전자와 암을 유발하는 돌연변이 부위를 밝히는데 큰 도움이 되었으며, 암 연구에 있어 새로운 시각을 제시하는 전환점이 되었다.
바머스와 비숍은 40년이 넘는 긴 세월 동안 협동하여 수많은 암 관련 연구를 했다.
레트로바이러스의 DNA 합성과 그것의 숙주세포 염색체로의 도입 과정을 연구하고, Wnt-1 암 유발 유전자를 발견했으며 B형 간염 바이러스의 복제과정을 연구했다.
또 레트로바이러스 단백질 합성 과정 중의 리보좀(ribosome) 프레임시프팅(frameshifting) 기전을 밝혔고, 인간 폐암세포의 표면 성장인자 수용체의 돌연변이를 연구했으며, 레트로바이러스의 세포 수용체를 분리해내기도 했다.
