※ Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (Antoine Marie Jean-Baptiste Roger, comte de Saint-Exupéry, 1900~1944, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry - Wikipedia ) ; 19세기초 프랑스의 작가, 시인, 언론인, 비행사(a French writer, poet, journalist and aviator)이다.

그는 북서 아프리카, 남대서양, 남아메리카 항공로의 개척자이며, 야간 비행의 선구자 중 한 사람이다.

제 2차 세계 대전(World War II) 당시 그는 공군 장교로 참전했으며, 1944년 7월 31일 지중해의 프랑스 코르시카 섬에서 정찰 임무를 수행하던 중 행방 불명되었다.

※ Decimus Junius Juvenalis(55~140, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juvenal ) ; 1~2세기 로마의 시인(Roman poet)이다. 작품에는 《Satires(풍자시집 諷刺詩集)》이 남아있으며 모두 풍자시로 당시의 부패한 사회상에 대한 분노가 드러나 있다.

빵과 서커스(Bread and circuses, panem et circenses)는 Juvenalis가 고대 로마 사회의 세태를 풍자하기 위해 시편에서 사용한 표현이다.

권력자로부터 무상으로 주어지는 빵(음식)과 서커스(오락)에 의해 로마 시민이 정치적 장님이 되었다고 지적했으며, 빵과 구경 거리(Bread and games)라고도 한다. 우민 정책(愚民政策)의 비유로 자주 사용되는 명언이며 경구(警句)이다.

Juvenalis는 제정(帝政) 초기 로마 주민이 공화정 시기와는 달리 정치적 소신도 없이 물질적 이득과 쾌락만 좇는다고 비난하면서, "그들은 조바심을 내면서 두 가지 것만을 간절히 바라고 있으니, 빵과 서커스가 그것이다"라고 조롱했다.

Adolf Hitler는 이 말을 변용하여 "대중을 다루는 데는 빵과 서커스면 충분하다"고 했으며, 빵과 서커스(Bread & Circus)라는 2003년에 제작된 노르웨이 영화도 있다.
