과학에 관심이 많은 학생이었던 그녀는 고등학교 때 전국 수준급의 테니스 선수이기도 했다.

그녀는 2001년에 샐리 라이드 과학재단(Sally Ride Science)을 설립하고, 레즈비언 파트너 반려자인 탐 오쇼너시(Tam O'Shaughnessy)와 함께 어린이들을 위한 과학책을 썼다.

우주비행 당시 그녀는 가장 젊은 미국 우주비행사(astronaut)였고, 그 기록은 현재까지 유효하다.

그녀는 동료 우주비행사 스티븐 홀리(Steven Hawley)와 결혼했으나 5년만에 이혼하고, 죽을 때까지 Tam O'Shaughnessy와 함께 살았다.
