그의 삶을 이끈 지도적 원리 가운데 하나로 수피즘(Sufism)이 있는데, 수피즘은 그 신봉자들에게 궁극적 실재와의 합일을 추구하는 데 절대적으로 헌신할 것을 요구하는 신비주의 운동이다.

​

서구 문학에도 영향을 주어 특히 괴테가 이 시인의 독일어 번역판의 시를 읽고 깊은 감명을 받아 서동시집(西東詩集)을 읊은 일로 유명하다.

​

신비주의자였던 그는 술·미녀·연인에 대하여 도취적(陶醉的)인 시를 지었다고 하나 표면상의 의미 이외에 내면에도 신비주의의 의미를 포함하고 있다.

​

티무르(Timur)와의 조우(遭遇)를 둘러싼 일화도 잘 알려져 있다. ‘하피즈 시집’은 유럽 여러 나라 언어로 번역되었다.

​

페르시아어권 전역에서 그의 시가 특별히 널리 유포되어온 것은, 그가 운율을 따르기는 하지만 인위적인 세련미 없이 소박하면서도 종종 일상 회화적이기까지 한 언어를 구사하며, 꾸밈이 없고 통속적인 이미지와 쉬운 관용 표현들을 사용했기 때문이다.

​

서양에서도 그의 시는 널리 유행되었으며, 수많은 번역본들이 있다. 그의 가장 유명한 작품들은 [디반 Divan Hafez]이라는 그의 저술에 실려 있다.
