1. Love cannot be explained, yet it explains all.
사랑은 설명할 수 없지만 모든 것을 설명한다.
2. What is the point of roaming the world when it's the same misery everywhere?
도처에 똑같은 불행이 있을 때 세상을 배회(徘徊)하는 것이 무슨 의미가 있겠는가?
3. Time is just an illusion.
What you need is to live this very moment.
That is all that matters.
시간은 환상일 뿐이다.
우리에게 필요한 것은 바로 이 순간을 사는 것이다.
그게 중요하다.
4. If you want to experience eternal illumination, put the past and the future out of your mind and remain within the present moment.
영원한 빛을 경험하고 싶다면, 과거와 미래를 머릿속에서 버리고 현재에 머물러라.
5. I hunt everywhere for a life worth living and a knowledge worth knowing.
Having roots nowhere, I have everywhere to go.
나는 살아볼 가치가 있는 인생과 알 가치가 있는 지식을 위해 어디에서나 사냥을 한다.
어디에도 뿌리를 내리지 않았으므로, 나는 가야 할 곳이 어디에나 있다.
6. Every true love and friendship is a story of unexpected transformation.
If we are the same person before and after we loved, that means we haven't loved enough.
모든 진정한 사랑과 우정은 예상치 못한 변화의 이야기이다.
사랑하기 전과 후에 같은 사람이라면, 그것은 충분히 사랑하지 않았다는 것을 의미한다.
7. Whatever happens in your life, no matter how troubling things might seem, do not enter the neighborhood of despair.
Even when all doors remain closed, God will open up a new path only for you.

자신의 삶에 무슨 일이 일어나든, 아무리 괴로운 일이 있더라도 절망의 동네에 들어가지 마라.
모든 문이 닫혀 있어도 하나님은 당신에게만 새로운 길을 열어주실 것이다.
하나님께 감사드려라!
8. To each his own way and his own prayer.
God does not take us at our word.
He looks deep into our hearts.
It is not the ceremonies or rituals that make a difference, but whether our hearts are sufficiently pure or not.
각자 자신의 방식대로 기도한다.
하나님은 우리의 다양한 언어를 이해하지 못하신다.
그분은 우리 마음속을 꿰뚫어 보신다.
차이를 만드는 것은 의식(儀式)이나 의례(儀禮)가 아니라, 우리의 마음이 충분히 순수한지 여부(與否)이다.
9. No matter who we are or where we live, deep inside we all feel incomplete.
It's like we have lost something and need to get it back.
Just what that something is, most of us never find out.
And of those who do, even fewer manage to go out and look for it.
우리가 누구이고 어디에 살고 있든, 우리 모두는 내면 깊숙한 곳에서 불완전함을 느낀다.
마치 우리가 무언가를 잃어버렸고 되찾아야 하는 것과도 같다.
그것이 무엇인지, 우리 대부분은 결코 알지 못한다.
그렇게 하는 사람들 중 밖으로 나가 그것을 찾는 사람은 훨씬 적다.
10. Fret not where the road will take you.
Instead concentrate on the first step.
That's the hardest part and that's what you are responsible for.
Once you take that step let everything do what it naturally does and the rest will follow.
Do not go with the flow. Be the flow.
길이 어디로 펼쳐지느냐에 대해 걱정하지 마라.
대신 첫 번째 단계에 집중하라.
그것이 가장 어려운 부분이고 우리가 책임져야 하는 부분이다.
일단 우리가 그 단계를 밟으면 모든 것이 자연스럽게 하는 대로 하게 하고, 나머지는 따를 것이다.
흐름을 따라가지 말고, 흐름이 되어라.
11. Patience does not mean to passively endure.
It means to be farsighted enough to trust the end result of a process.
What does patience mean?
It means to look at the thorn and see the rose, to look at the night and see the dawn.
Impatience means to be so shortsighted as to not be able to see the outcome.
The lovers of God never run out of patience, for they know that time is needed for the crescent moon to become full.
인내는 수동적으로 견디는 것을 의미하지 않는다.
진행 과정의 최종 결과를 신뢰할 수 있을 만큼 선견지명이 있다는 의미이다.
인내는 무슨 뜻일까?
가시를 보고 장미를 예상하며, 밤을 보고 새벽을 미루어 안다는 뜻이다.
조바심은 결과를 볼 수 없을 정도로 근시안적인 것을 의미한다.
하나님을 사랑하는 사람들은 초승달이 보름달이 되기까지 시간이 필요하다는 것을 알기 때문에, 인내심이 부족하지 않다.
12. How can love be worthy of its name if one selects solely the pretty things and leaves out the hardships?
It is easy to enjoy the good and dislike the bad.
Anybody can do that.
The real challenge is to love the good and the bad together, not because you need to take the rough with the smooth but because you need to go beyond such descriptions and accept love in its entirety.
예쁜 것만 고르고 고난은 빼면 사랑이 어찌 그 이름에 합당하리요.
좋은 것은 즐기고 나쁜 것은 싫어하기 쉽다.
그건 누구나 할 수 있다.
진정한 도전은 좋은 것과 나쁜 것을 모두 사랑하는 것이다.
거친 것을 부드러운 것으로 받아들여야 하기 때문이 아니라, 그러한 묘사를 넘어서 사랑 전체를 받아들여야 하기 때문이다.
13. A life without love is of no account.
Don't ask yourself what kind of love you should seek, spiritual or material, divine or mundane, Eastern or Western.
Divisions only lead to more divisions.
Love has no labels, no definitions.
It is what it is, pure and simple.
“Love is the water of life. And a lover is a soul of fire!“
The universe turns differently when fire loves water.
사랑이 없는 인생은 의미가 없다.
그 사랑이 영적인 것이든 물질적인 것이든, 신성한 것이든 세속적인 것이든, 동양적인 사랑이든 서양적인 사랑이든, 어떤 사랑을 구해야 하는지 스스로에게 묻지 마라.
분열은 더 많은 분열을 낳을 뿐이다.
사랑에는 꼬리표도 정의(定意)도 없다.
사랑은 바로 순수하고 단순한 것이다.
“사랑은 생명수이고, 연인은 불의 영혼이다!"
불이 물을 사랑할 때 우주는 다르게 돌아간다.
14. The universe is one being.
Everything and everyone is interconnected through an invisible web of stories.
Whether we are aware of it or not, we are all in a silent conversation.
Do no harm.
Practise compassion.
And do not gossip behind anyone's back - not even seemingly innocent remark!
The words that come out of our mouth do not vanish but are perpetually stored in infinite space, and they will come back to us in due time.
One man's pain will hurt us all.
One man's joy will make everyone smile.
우주는 하나의 존재이다.
모든 것과 모든 사람은 보이지 않는 이야기의 그물을 통해 서로 연결되어 있다.
우리가 그것을 알고 있든 아니든, 우리는 모두 조용한 대화 속에 있다.
해(害)를 끼치지 마라. 동정심(同情心)을 연마(練磨)하라.
누구의 뒤에서 험담도 하지 마라. 겉보기에 무해한 말이라도 하지 마라!
우리 입에서 나오는 말은 사라지지 않고 무한한 공간에 영원히 저장되고, 때가 되면 우리에게 돌아올 것이다.
한 사람의 고통은 우리 모두를 다치게 할 것이다.
한 사람의 기쁨은 모두를 웃게 할 것이다.
15. Loneliness and solitude are two different things.
When you are lonely, it is easy to delude yourself into believing that you are on the right path.
Solitude is better for us, as it means being alone without feeling lonely.
But eventually it is best to find a person, the person who will be your mirror.
Remember, only in another person's heart can you truly see yourself and the presence of God within you.
외로움과 고독은 다른 것이다.
우리가 외로울 때, 자신이 올바른 길을 가고 있다고 믿도록 스스로를 속이기 쉽다.
고독은 외로움을 느끼지 않고 혼자 있다는 것을 의미하기 때문에 우리에게 더 좋다.
그러나 결국에는 자신의 거울이 될 사람을 찾는 것이 가장 좋다.
오직 다른 사람의 마음을 통해서만 진정으로 자신의 마음 안에 계시는 하나님의 임재(臨在)를 볼 수 있다는 것을 기억하라.
16. Bountiful is your life, full and complete.
Or so you think, until someone comes along and makes you realize what you have been missing all this time.
Like a mirror that reflects what is absent rather than present, he shows you the void in your soul - the void you have resisted seeing.
That person can be a lover, a friend, or a spiritual master.
Sometimes it can be a child to look after.
What matters is to find the soul that will complete yours.
All the prophets have given the same advice: Find the one who will be your mirror!
풍요로운 삶은 충만하고 완전한 삶이다.
아니면 누군가가 와서 우리가 그동안 무엇을 놓치고 있었는지 깨닫게 해줄 때까지 그렇게 생각할 수 있다.
현재 있는 것이 아니라 없는 것을 비추는 거울처럼, 그 누군가는 우리에게 영혼의 공허함, 즉 우리가 보기를 거부해 온 공허함을 보여줄 것이다.
그 사람은 연인이 될 수도 있고, 친구가 될 수도 있으며, 영적인 스승이 될 수도 있다.
때로는 돌봐야 할 아이가 될 수도 있다.
중요한 것은 우리를 완성시켜줄 영혼을 찾는 것이다.
모든 예언자들은 같은 조언을 했다.
자기의 거울이 될 사람을 찾아라!
17. I like to borrow a metaphor from the great poet and mystic Rumi who talks about living like a drawing compass.
One leg of the compass is static.
It is fixed and rooted in a certain spot.
Meanwhile, the other leg draws a huge wide circle around the first one, constantly moving.
Just like that, one part of my writing is based in Istanbul.
It has strong local roots.
Yet at the same time the other part travels the whole wide world, feeling connected to several cities, cultures, and peoples.
나는 그림 나침반처럼 사는 것에 대해 이야기하는 위대한 시인이자 신비주의자인 루미(Rumi, https://jc2588.tistory.com/673 )에게서 은유를 빌리고 싶다.
나침반의 한쪽 다리는 고정되어 있다.
특정 지점에 고정되어 뿌리를 내리고 있다.
한편, 다른 쪽 다리는 첫 번째 다리 주위에 크고 넓은 원을 그리며 끊임없이 움직인다.
마찬가지로 내 글의 일부는 이스탄불에 기반을 두고 있다.
강한 지역적 뿌리를 가지고 있다.
그러나 동시에 다른 부분은 여러 도시, 문화, 사람들과 연결되어 있다고 느끼면서 전 세계를 여행한다.
