What did people truly want to say to the world?
I want to convey the true heart of the person published here.
With this mindset, I hope to properly express Thomas à Kempis's heart.
1. When anger enters the mind, wisdom departs.
분노가 마음에 들어오면 지혜가 떠난다.
2. Man sees your actions, but God your motives.
사람들은 우리의 액션을 보지만, 하나님은 우리의 동기(動機)를 보신다.
3. Constantly choose rather to want less, than to have more.
더 많은 것을 가지기보다는, 덜 원하는 것을 끊임없이 선택하라.
4. Be thankful for the smallest blessing, and you will be worthy to receive greater.
가장 작은 축복에 감사하면, 더 큰 축복을 받기에 합당하게 될 것이다.
5. To say that I am made in the image of God is to say that love is the reason for my existence, for God is love.
내가 하나님의 형상대로 만들어졌다는 것은 사랑이 나의 존재 이유이며, 하나님은 사랑이시기 때문이라고 말하는 것이다.
6. Be not angry that you cannot make others as you wish them to be, since you cannot make yourself as you wish to be.
우리는 자신이 원하는 대로 자신을 만들 수 없다.
그러니 다른 사람들을 내가 원하는 대로 만들 수 없다고 해서 화내지 마라.
7. If we live in peace ourselves, we in turn may bring peace to others.
A peaceable man does more good than a learned one.
우리 자신이 평화롭게 살면, 다른 사람들에게도 평화를 가져다 줄 수 있다.
평화로운 사람은 학식 있는 사람보다 더 많은 선행을 한다.
8. Don't think so much about who is for or against you, rather give all your care, that God be with you in everything you do.
누가 나를 찬성하는지, 반대하는지에 대해 너무 많이 생각하지 마라.
내가 하는 모든 일에 하나님이 함께 하시도록 모든 보살핌을 다 바쳐라.
9. Always keep a good distance between yourself and lying, quarreling, detracting, insulting and gossip.
The person who can do that will some day learn to enjoy the silence.
거짓말, 다툼, 비방, 모욕, 험담과 항상 거리를 유지하라.
이렇게 할 수 있는 사람은 언젠가는 침묵을 즐기는 법을 배우게 될 것이다.
10. Judge yourself and beware of passing judgement on others.
In judging others we expend our energy to no purpose; we are often mistaken and easily sin.
자신을 심판하고 다른 사람을 심판하지 않도록 조심하라.
다른 사람을 심판할 때 우리는 아무 목적 없이 에너지를 소비한다.
우리는 종종 실수하고 쉽게 죄를 짓는다.
11. Do not try to find a place free from temptations and troubles.
Rather, seek a peace that endures even when you are beset by various temptations and tried by much adversity.
유혹과 문제가 없는 곳을 찾으려 하지 마라.
오히려 여러 가지 시험과 많은 역경(逆境)을 만나도 견딜 수 있는 평안을 구하라.
12. If you want to learn something that will really help you, learn to see yourself as God sees you and not as you see yourself in the distorted mirror of your own self-importance.
자신에게 정말로 도움이 될 무언가를 배우고 싶다면, 자신을 왜곡된 거울에 비친 자신의 모습이 아니라 하나님이 보시는 것처럼 자신을 보는 법을 배워라.
13. Many who love the kingdom of God, but few who bear a cross.
Jesus has many who desire His comfort, but few who desire His suffering.
All want to rejoice with him, but few are willing to suffer for Him.
There are many who admire his miracles, but there are few who follow in the humiliation of the cross.
하나님의 나라를 사랑하는 사람은 많으나 십자가를 지는 사람은 적다.
예수님의 위로를 바라는 사람은 많지만, 그분의 고난을 바라는 사람은 적다.
모든 사람이 그분과 함께 기뻐하고 싶어하지만, 그분을 위해 기꺼이 고난을 받는 사람은 거의 없다.
그분의 기적을 존경하는 사람은 많지만, 십자가의 치욕을 따르는 사람은 적다.
14. Patience is necessary in this life because so much of life is fraught with adversity.
No matter how hard we try, our lives will never be without strife and grief.
Thus, we should not strive for a peace that is without temptation, or for a life that never feels adversity.
Peace is not found by escaping temptations, but by being tried by them.
We will have discovered peace when we have been tried and come through the trial of temptation.
인생의 많은 부분이 역경(逆境)으로 가득 차 있기 때문에 이승에서는 인내가 필요하다.
아무리 애를 써도 우리 인생은 결코 투쟁과 슬픔이 없을 수 없다.
그러므로 우리는 유혹이 없는 평안이나 역경을 느끼지 않는 삶을 위해 애쓰지 말아야 한다.
평화는 유혹을 피하는 것이 아니라, 시험을 받음으로써 얻을 수 있다.
우리는 시험을 받고 시련을 겪을 때 평안을 발견하게 될 것이다.
