What did people truly want to say to the world?
I want to convey the true heart of the person published here.
With this mindset, I hope to properly express William Eggleston's heart.

1. I never think of [a photograph] beforehand.

When I get there, something happens and in a split second the pictures emerges.

나는 사진을 찍기 전에 미리 생각하지 않는다.

현장에 도착하면 무언가가 일어나고, 순식간에 사진이 나타난다.

2. Whether a photo or music, or a drawing or anything else I might do – it’s ultimately all an abstraction of my peculiar experience.

사진이든, 음악이든, 그림이든, 내가 하는 그 무엇이든 간에, 궁극적으로는 모두 나만의 독특한 경험을 추상적으로 표현한 것이다.

3. I am afraid that there are more people than I can imagine who can go no further than appreciating a picture that is a rectangle with an object in the middle of it, which they can identify.

생각보다 많은 사람들이, 단순히 가운데에 사물이 있는 직사각형 사진을 보고 그 이상의 것을 감상하지 못하는 것 같으며, 그 사물이 무엇인지 제대로 알아보지 못하는 사람들이 있을까 봐 걱정이다.

4. I wanted to see a lot of things in color because the world is in color.

I was affected by it all the time, particularly certain times of the day when the sun made things really starkly stand out.

세상이 다 색깔로 가득 차 있기 때문에 나도 많은 것들을 색상으로 보고 싶었다.

특히 햇빛이 비추는 특정 시간대에는 세상의 색깔이 더욱 선명하게 드러나곤 했다.

5. I want to make a picture that could stand on its own, regardless of what it was a picture of.

I’ve never been a bit interested in the fact that this was a picture of a blues musician or a street corner or something.

나는 사진의 주제가 무엇이든 간에, 그 자체로 의미를 지니는 사진을 만들고 싶다.

블루스 뮤지션을 찍은 것이든, 거리의 한 모퉁이를 찍은 것이든 간에, 나는 그 어떤 것에도 관심이 없었다.

6. I have always assumed that the abstract qualities of the photographs were very obvious.

For instance, I can turn them upside down and they’re still interesting to me as pictures.

If you turn a picture that’s not well organized upside down, it won’t work.

7. What we called photojournalism, the photos seen in places like Life magazine, didn’t interest me either.

They were just not good-there was no art there.

The first person who I respected immensely was Henri Cartier-Bresson( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henri_Cartier-Bresson ).

I still do.

라이프지 같은 곳에서 볼 수 있는 사진들, 소위 포토저널리즘이라고 불리는 것들도 내게는 흥미로웠다.

그런 사진들은 훌륭하지 않았고, 예술성이 전혀 없었다.

내가 진심으로 존경하게 된 첫 번째 사람은 앙리 카르티에 브레송이다.

지금도 나는 그분을 여전히 존경한다.

8. My friend who was also interested in photographing, one time he bought many books containing photojournalism pictures.

To me they were not interesting.

But then I saw this one [Henri Cartier-Bresson’s ‘Decisive Moment’] and oh my God, this is not photojournalism – this is great art.

Compositions, obvious knowledge of painting… and the way of composing, and they’re still great.

사진에 관심이 많았던 내 친구는 한때 포토저널리즘 사진집을 여러 권 샀다.

하지만 나는 그런 사진들에 별 흥미를 느끼지 못했다.

그런데 앙리 카르티에 브레송의 '결정적 순간'을 보고는, 세상에, 이건 포토저널리즘이 아니라 위대한 예술 작품이라는 생각이 들었다.

구도, 회화에 대한 지식, 구도를 잡는 방식까지, 모든 것이 훌륭했다.

9. I couldn’t imagine doing anything more than making a perfect fake Cartier-Bresson.

His were the first pictures I’d seen which weren’t just straight-on pictures like everybody else’s.

He had angles like Degas( https://cw2588.blogspot.com/2024/09/impressionist-artist-edgar-degas-quotes.html ) or Toulouse-Lautrec( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henri_de_Toulouse-Lautrec ).

나는 카르티에 브레송의 완벽한 모조품을 만드는 것 외에는 아무것도 할 수 없다고 생각한다.

10. A picture is what it is and I’ve never noticed that it helps to talk about them, or answer specific questions about them, much less volunteer information in words.

It wouldn’t make any sense to explain them.

Kind of diminishes them.

People always want to know when something was taken, where it was taken, and, God knows, why it was taken.

It gets really ridiculous.

I mean, they’re right there, whatever they are.

사진은 그 자체로 존재하는 것이고, 사진에 대해 이야기하거나 구체적인 질문에 답하거나, 더 나아가 말로 정보를 덧붙이는 것이 도움이 된다는 생각은 해본 적이 없다.

사진을 설명하는 것은 아무런 의미가 없다.

오히려 사진의 가치를 떨어뜨리는 것 같다.

사람들은 항상 사진이 언제, 어디서, 왜 찍혔는지 알고 싶어 한다.

정말 어처구니가 없다.

사진은 그냥 거기에 있는 것이다.
