※ William Eugene Smith(1918~1978, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W._Eugene_Smith , https://www.magnumphotos.com/photographer/w-eugene-smith ) ; 미국의 사진 저널리스트(photojournalist). 사람의 심리를 파고드는 인간미가 넘치는 포토에세이로 유명하다.

제2차 세계 대전에서 종군작가로 활약했으며 오키나와, 이오지마, 괌, 사이판 등 태평양 전쟁의 주요 전장을 돌아다니며 미국 해병대와 일본군 포로들의 모습을 카메라에 담았다.

후에 일본의 미나마타병(Minamata disease, 일본 구마모토현[態本縣] 미나마타만 주변에서 발생한 유기 수은 중독증이다. 미나마타만에서 잡힌 어패류를 먹은 사람의 신경이 손상되어 사지마비와 언어장애가 일어나고 눈과 귀의 기능이 상실됨)을 집중취재하여 그 존재를 세상에 알렸으나, 1972년 누군가로부터 폭행당하여 척추 손상 및 한쪽 눈 실명이라는 중상을 입었다. 이후 후유증에 시달리다가 1978년 뇌출혈로 사망하였다.
