His discovery in 1928 of what was later named benzylpenicillin (or penicillin G) from the mould Penicillium rubens has been described as the "single greatest victory ever achieved over disease"{1928년에 곰팡이 Penicillium rubens에서 나중에 benzylpenicillin(또는 penicillin G)으로 명명된 것을 발견한 것은 "질병에 대한 역사상 가장 위대한 승리"로 묘사되었다}.
For this discovery, he shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1945 with Howard Florey and Ernst Chain(이 발견으로 그는 1945년에 Howard Florey와 Ernst Chain과 함께 노벨 생리학·의학상을 공동 수상했다).

1. Nature makes penicillin, I just found it.
자연이 페니실린을 만든 것이고 나는 발견했을 뿐이다.

And these people knew enough to translate ordinary happenings into something new...
새로운 것의 탄생에는 어떤 해프닝이 일어나는 것 같다.
뉴턴은 사과가 떨어지는 것을 보았고, 제임스 와트는 주전자가 끓는 것을 지켜보았으며, 뢴트겐은 흐릿해진 사진판을 주시했다.
이 사람들은 평범한 일을 새로운 것으로 바꿀 만큼 연구에 연구를 거듭했었다.
