※ Carl Gustav Jung (1875~1961, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Jung ) ; 20세기 스위스의 정신의학자(psychiatrist and psychoanalyst)로 분석심리학(analytical psychology)의 개척자이다.

그는 특정한 상태를 설명하기 위해 지금은 유명해진 콤플렉스(complex)라는 단어를 사용해 이에 관련된 학설의 기초를 마련하였다.

그는 인간의 내면에는 의식과 무의식의 층들이 있다고 생각하였지만, 한걸음 더 나아가 특히 개체로 하여금 내면의 무의식들이 통일된 전체를 실현하게 하는 자기원형이 초월적 기능(transcendental function)이 있음을 주장했다.

그는 자신의 경험으로부터 심리치료법을 개발하여 이론화하였고, 심리치료를 받는 사람들에게 '개체화'(individuation, 또는 자기실현)라고 하는 자신의 신화를 추구하는 과정을 통해 좀더 유연하고 온전한 인격체로 나아갈 수 있다고 생각하였다.

그는 한 개인의 의식과 무의식 그리고 집단무의식이 대립구도(enantiodromia)를 이루면서 이러한 대립 속에서 끊임없이 조화를 향해 역동적으로 움직인다는것을 인식했다. 그리고 이러한 심리학적 연구가 인간의 삶을 이해하고 도울 수 있는 길일 것으로 여겼다.

한편 이러한 맥락에서 그는 인간이 겪는 괴로움과 고통이 심리적, 사회적 성숙으로 이어지는 긍정적인 결과로서 삶에 대한 겸손(humble)을 주요하게 언급한 바 있다.

가족과 있을 때, 친구와 있을 때, 직장 혹은 학교에 있을 때, 모르는 사람들과 있을 때 우리는 항상 상황에 맞는 행동을 한다. 심지어는 때에 따라 전혀 다른 사람처럼 행동할 때도 있다. 그는 이것을 '페르소나(Persona)'라는 개념으로 설명했다.

페르소나의 어원은 '인격'이라는 뜻을 지닌 라틴어가 어원이며, 극 중에 배우들이 쓰는 가면을 일컫는 말이다. 이것을 그는 '타인에게 인식되는 내 모습', '개인과 사회에서 맺어지는 일종의 타협'이라는 개념으로 확장하여 설명했다.

페르소나는 '나 자신'이 중요한 것이 아니라, '타인에게 보이는 나'를 훨씬 중요하게 생각하는 개념이다.
