What did people truly want to say to the world?
I want to convey the true heart of the person published here.
With this mindset, I hope to properly express Molly Ivins's heart.
1. Manners are just a formal expression of how you treat people.
매너는 사람을 대하는 틀에 박힌 표현 방식이다.
2. The thing about democracy is that it is not neat, orderly, or quiet.
민주주의의 제반(諸般) 문제는 깔끔하지도, 질서정연하지도, 조용하지도 않다.
3. It is possible to read the history of this country as one long struggle to extend the liberties established in our Constitution to everyone in America.
미국 역사는, 헌법에 확립된 자유를 미국에 있는 모든 사람들에게 확대하기 위한 오랜 투쟁임을 보여주고 있다.
4. You look at the large problems that we face - that would be overpopulation, water shortages, global warming and AIDS, I suppose - all of that needs international cooperation to be solved.
인구 과잉, 물 부족, 지구 온난화, 에이즈 등 우리가 직면하고 있는 큰 문제들이 해결되기 위해서는 국제적인 협력이 필요하다.
5. There is no inverse relationship between freedom and security.
Less of one does not lead to more of the other.
People with no rights are not safe from terrorist attack.
자유와 안보(安保) 사이는 반비례 관계가 아니다.
자유가 줄어든다고 해서 더 안전해지는 것도 아니고,
안전이 줄어든다고 해서 자유가 더 신장(伸張)되는 것도 아니다.
권리가 없는 사람들은 테러 공격으로부터 안전하지 않다.
6. So keep fightin' for freedom and justice, beloveds, but don't you forget to have fun doin' it.
Lord, let your laughter ring forth.
Be outrageous, ridicule the fraidy-cats, rejoice in all the oddities that freedom can produce.
사랑하는 여러분, 자유와 정의를 위해 계속 싸우되 재미있게 하는 것을 잊지 말라.
주여, 당신의 웃음소리가 울려 퍼지게 하소서.
겁쟁이 고양이들한테는 비웃음을 날리고, 자유가 만들어내는 모든 기이한 것들에 기뻐하라.
7. Age has given me what I was looking for my entire life.
It provided me the time and experience and failures and triumphs and friends who helped me step into the shape that had been waiting for me all my life.
나이는 내가 평생 찾던 것을 내게 주었다.
나이는 나에게 시간과 경험과 실패와 승리, 그리고 평생을 기다려왔던 모습으로 내가 나아갈 수 있도록 도와준 친구들을 제공해주었다.
8. Listen to the people who are talking about how to fix what's wrong, not the ones who just work people into a snit over the problems.
Listen to the people who have ideas about how to fix things, not the ones who just blame others.
그 문제에 대해 비웃는 사람들이 아니라 문제를 해결하는 방법을 말하는 사람들의 말을 들어라.
남을 탓하는 사람들이 아니라 어떻게 고쳐야 할지에 대한 생각을 가진 사람들의 말을 들어라.
9. I think government is a tool, like a hammer.
You can use a hammer to build or you can use a hammer to destroy ; there is nothing intrinsically good or evil about the hammer itself.
It is the purposes to which it is put and the skill with which it is used that determine whether the hammer's work is good or bad.
정부는 망치와 같은 도구라고 생각한다.
망치를 사용하여 무언가를 만들 수도 있고 파괴할 수도 있다.
망치 자체에는 본질적으로 선악이 없다.
망치의 작업이 좋은지 나쁜지를 결정하는 것은, 망치로 인하여 만들어진 결과물을 어디에 두느냐와 망치를 사용하는 기술이다.
10. There are two kinds of humor.
One kind that makes us chuckle about our foibles and our shared humanity.
The other kind holds people up to public contempt and ridicule -- that's what I do.
Satire is traditionally the weapon of the powerless against the powerful.
I only aim at the powerful.
When satire is aimed at the powerless, it is not only cruel -- it's vulgar.
유머에는 두 가지 종류가 있다.
하나는, 우리의 약점과 우리가 공유하는 사람의 속성에 대해 웃게 만드는 종류이다.
다른 하나는, 사람들을 대중(大衆)의 경멸과 조롱에 굴복시키는 종류인데, 이게 바로 내가 하는 일이다.
풍자(諷刺)는 전통적으로 권력자에 대항하는 힘없는 사람들의 무기이다.
나는 권력자들만 노린다.
힘없는 사람들을 향해 풍자를 퍼붓는 것은 잔인할 뿐만 아니라 천박하다.
