※ Robert Burns (1759~1796, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Burns ) ; a Scottish poet and lyricist.

He is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland and is celebrated worldwide.

He is regarded as a pioneer of the Romantic movement, and after his death he became a great source of inspiration to the founders of both liberalism and socialism, and a cultural icon in Scotland and among the Scottish diaspora around the world.

In 2009 he was chosen as the greatest Scot by the Scottish public in a vote run by Scottish television channel STV.

His poem (and song) "Auld Lang Syne" is often sung at Hogmanay (the last day of the year), and "Scots Wha Hae" served for a long time as an unofficial national anthem of the country.

1. We cannot be mere consumers of good governance, we must be participants; we must be co-creators.

2. As citizens, we have to co-create good governance, we cannot outsource it and hope to be passively happy consumers.

Like everything worth its while, good governance must be earned.

For one, philanthropic capital can go where markets will not go and where states often cannot go.

So, the big challenge for philanthropy is... can it engage with the distribution of wealth itself?

12. History has shown us many times that if the state repressively forces the redistribution of wealth and social justice, it becomes dangerous both for democracy and for human creativity.

Yet, restraining the excesses of a capitalist structure that creates new inequities seems to need more than good public policy.

역사는 국가가 억압적인 방식으로 부와 사회 정의의 재분배를 강요할 때, 민주주의와 인간의 창의성 모두에 위험해진다는 것을 여러 차례 보여주었다.

하지만 새로운 불평등을 만들어내는 자본주의 구조의 폐해를 억제하려면, 훌륭한 공공 정책 이상의 것이 필요한 것 같다.

13. Most disciplines invite us to more mindfulness, and more contentment.

Not by consuming more externally, but by harvesting more from within, and by sharing more without.

Neurosciences and behavioural sciences increasingly corroborate this ancient wisdom - joy can come from giving, and unlimited happiness from bonhomie.

대부분의 학문은 우리에게 더 많은 마음 챙김과 더 큰 만족감으로 초대한다.

외부에서 더 많이 소비함으로써가 아니라, 내면에서 더 많이 수확하고, 외부와 더 많이 나눔으로써 이다.
