What did people truly want to say to the world?
I want to convey the true heart of the person published here.
With this mindset, I hope to properly express Robert Motherwell's heart.
1. Art is an experience, not an object.
예술은 일종의 경험이지 대상이 아니다.
2. Art is much less important than life, but what a poor life without it.
예술은 인생보다 훨씬 덜 중요하지만, 예술이 없는 인생은 얼마나 빈천하겠는가.
3. Without ethical consciousness, a painter is only a decorator.
윤리 의식이 없으면 화가는 장식가에 불과하다.
4. One's art is just one's effort to wed oneself to the universe, to unify oneself through union.
한 사람의 예술은 자신을 우주와 결합시키고, 결합을 통해 자신을 통합하려는 노력이라고 할 수 있다.
5. For a painter as abstract as myself, the collages offer a way of incorporating bits of the everyday world into pictures.
나처럼 추상적인 화가에게 콜라주는 일상 세계의 일부를 그림에 통합하는 방법을 제공해준다.
6. Most painting in the European tradition was painting the mask.
Modern art rejected all that.
Our subject matter was the person behind the mask.
유럽 전통의 그림 대부분은 가면을 그리는 것이었다.
현대 미술은 그 모든 것을 거부했다.
우리의 주제는 가면 뒤에 있는 사람이다.
7. Painting is a medium in which the mind can actualize itself; it is a medium of thought.
Thus painting, like music, tends to become its own content.

8. Abstract art is uniquely modern.
It is a fundamentally romantic response to modern life - rebellious, individualistic, unconventional, sensitive, irritable.
추상 미술은 독특하게 현대적이다.
추상 미술은 반항적이고, 개인주의적이며, 관습에 얽매이지 않고, 민감하며, 짜증을 잘 내는 현대 생활에 대한 근본적으로 낭만적인 반응이다.
9. In a way, painting is like wine: it is as old, as simple, as primitive and as varied.
Like wine, it is a very specific means of expression, with a limited vocabulary, but vast in its expressive potential.
어떤 면에서 그림은 와인과도 같다.
그림은 오래되고 단순하며, 원시적이고 다양하다.
와인과 마찬가지로 그림은 제한된 어휘를 지닌 매우 구체적인 표현 수단이지만, 표현의 잠재력은 엄청나다.
10. Sometimes images may emerge from some chord in my subconscious, the way a dream might.
Even in those paintings where an image unconsciously develops, a certain kind of experience is usually necessary in order to perceive it.
때로는 꿈처럼 내 잠재의식 속의 어떤 심금에서 이미지가 나타날 수도 있다.
이미지가 무의식적으로 전개되는 그림에서도 그것을 인식하기 위해서는 대개 일정한 경험이 필요하다.
11. For me, the sketchbooks are more like a secret and wholly spontaneous jeu d'esprit and some of them I like as much as anything I have ever done.
They are invariably without premeditation.
I mean not only that I have no plan when I make them, I also have no plan to make them.
나에게 스케치북은 비밀스럽고 완전히 즉흥적인 정신에 가깝고, 그 중 일부는 내가 지금까지 해본 어떤 것보다도 마음에 든다.
스케치북은 변함없이 사전 계획이 없다.
내 말은, 만들 때 아무런 계획도 없고, 만들 계획도 없다는 뜻이다.
