What did people truly want to say to the world?
I want to convey the true heart of the person published here.
With this mindset, I hope to properly express Neil Gaiman's heart.
1. A book is a dream that you hold in your hands.
책은 자기 손에 쥐어진 꿈이다.
2. Libraries really are the gates to the future.
도서관은 정말로 미래로 가는 문이다.
3. I see libraries and librarians as frontline soldiers in the war against illiteracy and the lack of imagination.
나는 도서관과 사서(司書)들을 문맹 퇴치와 상상력 부족과의 전쟁에서 최전선에 있는 전사(戰士)라고 생각한다.
4. Books make great gifts because they have whole worlds inside of them.
And it's much cheaper to buy somebody a book than it is to buy them the whole world!
책은 그 안에 온 세상이 담겨 있기 때문에 훌륭한 선물이다.
누군가에게 책 한 권을 선물하는 것이 온 세상을 선물하는 것보다 훨씬 저렴하다!
5. Read. Read anything.
Read the things they say are good for you, and the things they claim are junk.
You’ll find what you need to find. Just read.
읽어라. 무엇이든 읽어라.
자신에게 좋다고 생각되는 것들도 읽고, 쓸모없다고 생각되는 것들도 읽어라.
그러다 보면 자신이 찾아야 할 것을 발견하게 될 것이다. 그냥 읽어라.
6. Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten.
동화(童話)는 진실 그 이상이다.
용이 존재한다고 말해서가 아니라, 용을 물리칠 수 있다고 말해주기 때문이다.
7. You have to finish things – that’s what you learn from, you learn by finishing things.
일은 끝내야 배움을 얻는 법이다.
일을 끝맺음으로써 무언가를 배우는 것이다.
8. Whatever it takes to finish things, finish.
You will learn more from a glorious failure than you ever will from something you never finished.
무슨 수를 써서라도 일을 끝내라.
영광스러운 실패에서 배우는 것이, 끝내지 못한 일에서 배우는 것보다 훨씬 더 많다.
9. Being brave doesn’t mean you aren’t scared.
Being brave means you are scared, really scared, badly scared, and you do the right thing anyway.
용감하다는 것은 두려움이 없다는 뜻이 아니다.
용감하다는 것은 두려움을 느끼고, 정말 많이 두려워하면서도, 그럼에도 불구하고 옳은 일을 한다는 뜻이다.
10. Go and make interesting mistakes, make amazing mistakes, make glorious and fantastic mistakes.
Break rules. Leave the world more interesting for your being here.
살아가며 흥미로운 실수를 저질러라. 놀라운 실수를 해라. 영광스럽고 환상적인 실수를 저질러라.
규칙을 깨라. 자신의 존재로 인해서 이 세상을 더 흥미롭게 만들어라.
11. I hope that this year, you make mistakes.
If you do, then it means you have tried, learned, lived, pushed yourself, changed you and your world, and most importantly, you’ve done something.
올해는 실수 좀 하시길 바랍니다.
실수를 한다는 건 시도해 보고, 배우며, 경험하고, 스스로를 채찍질하며, 자신과 세상을 변화시켰다는 뜻이다. 그리고 무엇보다 중요한 건, 무언가를 해냈다는 것이다.
12. The one thing that you have that nobody else has is you.
Your voice, your mind, your story, your vision.
So write and draw and build and play and dance and live as only you can.
세상에 단 하나, 자신에게만 있는 것은 바로 자기 자신이다.
나의 목소리, 나의 생각, 나의 스토리, 나의 비전.
그러니 자신만이 할 수 있는 방식으로 쓰고 그리며, 만들고 놀며, 춤추며 살아가라.
