※ Alan Wilson Watts (1915~1973, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Watts ) ; a British and American writer, speaker, and self-styled "philosophical entertainer", known for interpreting and popularising Buddhist, Taoist, and Hindu philosophy for a Western audience.
He wrote more than 25 books and articles on religion and philosophy, introducing the Beat Generation and the emerging counterculture to The Way of Zen (1957), one of the first best-selling books on Buddhism.
In Psychotherapy East and West (1961), he argued that psychotherapy could become the West's way of liberation if it discarded dualism.

What did people truly want to say to the world?
I want to convey the true heart of the person published here.
With this mindset, I hope to properly express Alan Watts's heart.
1. The meaning of life is just to be alive.
인생의 의미는 단지 생생하게 살아있다는 것이다.
2. Muddy water is best cleared by leaving it alone.
흙탕물은 그냥 내비둘 때 가장 깨끗해진다.
3. Man suffers only because he takes seriously what the Gods made for fun.
신(神)이 우리에게 삶을 준 이유가 재밌게 살라고 준 것임에도 불구하고, 사람들이 고통을 겪는 이유는 스스로 삶을 너무 심각하게 받아들이기 때문이다.
4. Never pretend to a love which you do not actually feel, for love is not ours to command.
사랑은 우리가 좌지우지 못하므로 실제로 느끼지 못하는 사랑을 느끼는 척 하지 말라.
5. No valid plans for the future can be made by those who have no capacity for living now.
현재를 살아갈 능력이 없는 사람은 미래에 대한 어떤 유효한 계획도 세울 수 없다.
6. The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.
변화를 이해하는 유일한 방법은, 그 속에 뛰어들어 그 변화와 함께 움직이고 그 춤에 합류하는 것이다.
7. You and I are all as much continuous with the physical universe as a wave is continuous with the ocean.
파도가 큰 바다와 연결되어 있듯이 우리 모두는 물리적 우주와 연관되어 있다.
8. A person who thinks all the time has nothing to think about except thoughts, so he loves touch with reality and lives in a world of illusions.
언제나 생각만 하는 사람에게 생각할 거리라고는 생각 외에는 아무것도 없다.
이런 사람은 현실과는 동떨어진 채 환상 속에서 살아간다.
9. This is the real secret to life - to be completely engaged with what you are doing in the here and now. And instead of calling it work, realize it is play.
인생의 진정한 비결은 자기가 하는 일에 지금 여기에서 완전히 몰입하는 것이다.
이것은 일이 아니라 play라는 것을 깨쳐라.
10. Zen does not confuse spirituality with thinking about God while one is peeling potatoes.
Zen spirituality is just to peel the potatoes.
선(禪)은 감자 껍질을 벗기면서 신(神)을 생각하는 것이 영성(靈性)이라고 착각하지 않는다.
선에서 영성이란 감자 껍질을 벗기는 행위 그 자체다.
11. We seldom realize, for example that our most private thoughts and emotions are not actually our own.
For we think in terms of languages and images which we did not invent, but which were given to us by our society.
예를 들어, 우리가 직접 발명하지는 않았지만 사회가 우리에게 준 언어와 이미지의 관점에서 늘 우리가 생각하기 때문에, 가장 사적인 생각과 감정이 실제로 우리 자신의 것이 아니라는 것을 거의 깨닫지 못한다.
12. The art of living… is neither careless drifting on the one hand nor fearful clinging to the past on the other.
It consists in being sensitive to each moment, in regarding it as utterly new and unique, in having the mind open and wholly receptive.
인생이라는 예술은 지맘대로의 표류(漂流)도 아니고, 과거를 되새김질하며 지나간 일에 얽매이는 집착도 아니다.
인생을 완전히 새롭고 특별한 것으로 간주하고, 마음을 열고 인생만사를 수용하면서 매 순간에 섬세해지는 것이 바로 인생의 묘미다.
13. Write like you’re clinging to the edge of a cliff, white knuckles, on your last breath, and you’ve got just one last thing to say, like you’re a bird flying over us and you can see everything, and please, for God’s sake, tell us something that will save us from ourselves.
Write like you have a message from the king. Or don’t.
절벽의 끝에 매달려서 겁에 질려 마지막 순간에 임한 것처럼 글을 써라.
마지막으로 할 말만을 남겨뒀는데, 마치 우리들 너머로 날아가는 새처럼 모든 것을 볼 수 있다면, 나 자신으로부터 나를 구할 수 있도록 제발 좀 내게 말해다오.
당신이 임금님으로부터 받은 어떤 메시지를 가진 것처럼 글을 써라. 그러한 자세가 아니라면 아예 글을 쓰지 말라.
