What did people truly want to say to the world?
I want to convey the true heart of the person published here.
With this mindset, I hope to properly express Takashi Miike's heart.
1. I believe that every director's films reflect their lifestyle.
나는 모든 감독의 영화가 그들의 생활 방식을 반영한다고 믿고 있다.
2. Filmmaking is not a balancing act, although some directors think it is.
I don't believe in it.
I like ups and downs.
They're the best way to translate my feelings to the screen.
일부 감독들은 영화 제작은 균형을 잡는 행동이라고 생각한다.
나는 그렇게 생각하지 않는다.
나는 우여곡절을 좋아한다.

3. I don't know if I would call it therapy, but filmmaking is really the only thing I know how to do.
For me, making movies is a way to bring on change for myself, and I really enjoy that part.
영화 제작은 내게는 치료에 해당되며, 내가 치유될 수 있는 유일한 방법이 바로 영화 제작이다.

4. I think the reason why I have so many movies to my credit is that I never say no to any project, I never veto anything.
I sort of challenge myself to do stuff, even if it's something that I've never done before.
내가 이렇게 많은 영화를 가지고 있는 이유는 어떤 프로젝트에도 거절하지 않고, 어떤 것도 거부하지 않기 때문이라고 생각한다.
나는 비록 그것이 내가 전에 해본 적이 없는 일일지라도, 나 자신에게 무언가를 하도록 도전한다.
5. For better or worse, I refuse to live my life with regret.
Sometimes, I'll look back on my past mistakes with fondness.
But I never wished I wouldn't have made them.
That's why I don't like re-takes.
좋든 나쁘든 나는 후회하며 사는 것을 거부한다.
때때로, 나는 나의 과거의 실수를 애틋하게 되돌아볼 것이다.

6. On the times when I used to make movies that were with a lower budget, nobody was expecting it to be a hit, and nobody was paying attention to what I was doing, and it was a free type of creative process.
So, one way to reset myself is to go back to that kind of moviemaking.
저예산으로 영화를 만들던 시절에는 아무도 그것이 히트할 것이라고 기대하지 않았고, 아무도 내가 하는 일에 신경을 쓰지 않았으며, 그야말로 자유로운 상태의 창조적 과정이었다.
그래서 나 자신을 재정립하는 한 가지 방법은, 그런 종류의 영화 제작으로 돌아가는 것이다.
7. Bigger-budgeted films have more restrictions and less freedom to create.
Because of this, I try to find freedom in the people I work with.
I often work in ways I don't want to.
It's more about controlling the situation.
Lower-budget films are freer.
예산이 많이 투입된 영화는 제약(制約)이 많이 따르고 창조의 자유가 줄어든다.
이 때문에 나는 함께 일하는 사람들에게서 자유를 주려고 노력한다.
고예산 영화는 나로 하여금 종종 내가 원하지 않는 방식으로 일하게 만든다.
상황을 컨트롤하는 것이 아주 중요하다.
저예산 영화가 훨씬 자유롭다.
8. I don't choose to make low-budget films.
But that is the reality of surviving in the Japanese film industry.
However, the trade off is, since we're working on small budgets, we have freedom.
You can't buy this freedom with money.
With this freedom, I think there are an infinite number of possibilities.
나는 저예산 영화를 잘 선택하지 않는다.
하지만 저예산 영화들이 일본 영화계에서 살아남는 것이 현실이다.
그러나 우리는 적은 예산으로 작업하고 있기 때문에 자유가 있다.
이 자유는 돈으로는 살 수가 없다.
이 자유로움으로 무한한 가능성이 있다고 생각된다.
9. I don't think about the audience, I don't think about what makes them happy, because there's no way for me to know.
To try to think of what makes for entertainment is a very Japanese thing.
The people who think like this are old-fashioned.
They think of the audience as a mass, but in fact every person in the audience is different.
So entertainment for everyone doesn't exist.
나는 청중에 대해 생각하지 않고, 무엇이 그들을 행복하게 하는지에 대해 생각하지 않는다. 왜냐하면 내가 알 방법이 없기 때문이다.
무엇이 오락을 만드는지 생각하려고 노력하는 것은 아주 일본적인 것이다.
이런 생각을 하는 사람들은 구식(舊式)이다.
그들은 관객을 대중으로 생각하지만, 사실 관객은 모두 다르다.
따라서 모든 사람을 위한 엔터테인먼트는 존재하지 않는다.
10. Everyone has complexes about their body or their ability and skills and dream of a rebirth into something different.
I myself have always had that secret desire to become something completely different and enact revenge on certain things.
So I do that through my movies.
My desires become reality in the movie because it can't become real in real life.
모든 사람들은 자신의 몸이나 능력과 기술에 대한 콤플렉스를 가지고 있고, 다른 것으로의 재탄생을 꿈꾼다.
나 자신은 항상 완전히 다른 무언가가 되어 특정한 것들에 대한 복수를 하고 싶은 은밀한 욕망을 가지고 있었다.
그래서 나는 영화를 통해서 그렇게 한다.
내 욕망은 현실로 이루어질 수 없기 때문에 영화에서 실현된다.
11. The reason I like incorporating the Yakuza into my movies - all their actions, everything they do, you can say 'It's ok because he's a Yakuza'.
Changes happen very quickly in their world.
If you were trying to make a movie about politicians, it would takes years and years for something to change ; whereas for Yakuzas, it could only take one night and things can change dramatically.
내가 야쿠자를 내 영화에 넣기를 좋아하는 이유는, 그들의 모든 행동과 그들이 하는 모든 것은 '당신은 야쿠자이기 때문에 괜찮다' 라고 말할 수 있다.
야쿠자의 세계에서는 변화가 아주 빠르게 발생한다.
정치인에 대한 영화를 만들려고 하면 무언가가 바뀌는 데 몇 년이 걸릴 것이다.
반면에 야쿠자의 경우에는 하룻밤에도 상황이 극적으로 바뀔 수 있다.
12. Maybe many directors are trying to create their own style of filmmaking, or to respond to audiences that come expect a certain style from them. But I don't care about that - I don't intend to have a 'Miike' style. I just pour myself into each film, enjoy it, and then what comes out just seems to have a 'Miike' style.
아마도 많은 감독들이 그들 자신의 영화 제작 스타일을 창조하려고 하거나, 혹은 그들에게서 특정한 스타일을 기대하는 관객들에게 반응하기 위해 노력하고 있을 것이다.
하지만 나는 그것에 대해 신경쓰지 않는다.
나는 'Takashi Miike' 스타일을 가질 생각이 없다.
영화마다 나 자신을 쏟아붓고 즐기며 만들어져 나오는 결과가 'Takashi Miike' 스타일인 것 같다.
