그의 작품들에서는 기억과 회상의 의미와 기능에 대한 질문이 중요한 의미를 갖는다.

그는 트라우마를 입은 사람들에게 몰두했는데, 자기를 닮은 작품 중 화자(話者)와 같이 고향을 떠나 외국에서 새로운 방향을 찾으려는 이민자들이 그 사람들이다.

그에게 있어 독일과 유대인 사이의 관계는 특히 중요했다.

청소년일 때부터 그는 전쟁 중 일어난 일들과 Holocaust에 대한 아버지 세대의 침묵에 대해 분노했으며, 나중에 그는 전쟁 중 연합군이 독일 도시들을 파괴한 것에 대한 문단과 사회의 침묵에 대해서도 비판했다.

[Austerlitz]는 걸작으로 평가를 받고 있는데, 60세의 자크 아우스터리츠의 뿌리에 대한 추적이 기술된다.

이 작품은 2015년에 BBC가 선정한 2000~2014년 최고의 소설 20선에 포함되며 여태까지 가장 의미있는 21세기의 문학작품 중 하나로 선정되었다.
