※ William Makepeace Thackeray(1811~1863, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Makepeace_Thackeray ) ; 19세기 영국 문학을 대표하는 소설가. 적절히 억제된 교양있는 문체와 날카로운 역사 감각 등이 돋보인다.

좋아하는 그림 공부를 위해 파리에 건너가 보헤미안적인 생활을 하였다. 세상 물정에 어두워서 친구로부터 도락(道樂)을 배우고는 그 부채를 떠안았고, 끝내는 어떤 부실한 신문사를 매수하고 파산하여, 아버지의 유산을 22세의 나이에 탕진해버렸다.

하는 수 없이 삽화를 그리기도 하고, 신문사의 파리 통신원으로 일하며 구차한 생활을 하다가 1836년에 결혼하였다. 그러나 곧 아내는 정신병으로 발광(發狂)하여 한평생 그녀를 부양(扶養)했다.
