※ Wystan Hugh Auden(1907~1973, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W._H._Auden ) ; 20세기 영국계 미국(British-American)의 시인, 전 옥스포드 대학교 교수(Professor of Poetry at Oxford)이다.

T. S. 엘리엇(T.S. Eliot, https://cw2588.blogspot.com/2022/11/ts-eliott-s-sayings-quotes-wikipedia.html )이 대표하는 1920년대의 정신에 반기를 들어 마르크시즘의 문제를 시 가운데 넣어서 영국 시단에 신풍(新風)을 일으켰다.

이른바 '오든 그룹(Auden group)'의 지도적 존재이며, 병든 사회를 정신분석과 사회의식을 합친 수법으로 임상의(臨床醫)처럼 파헤쳤다.

그의 시적(詩的) 세계는 감성적인 측면에서 다분히 좌경적(左傾的)이었으나, 이는 핍박받는 빈민의 비참함과 이를 방관하는 사회에 대한 양심의 가책이 섞인 것이었다.

다른 한편 그는 예술가로서 고대 영시(英詩) 풍의 단음절 낱말을 많이 사용해 조롱이 섞인 경시와 모멸 풍의 독특한 스타일을 창출해냈다.

1939년 미국으로 귀화한 이후에는 종교적 색채가 가미된 작품을 많이 썼으며, 말년에는 앵그리칸(Anglican) 종교에 기울어 인간존재를 '사랑'의 면에서 고찰하는 것과 같은 시를 썼다.
