What did people truly want to say to the world?
I want to convey the true heart of the person published here.
With this mindset, I hope to properly express Tara Westover's heart.
1. The longer you stay, the less likely you will ever leave.
2. First find out what you are capable of, then decide who you are.
3. An education is not so much about making a living as making a person.
4. All my life those instincts had been instructing me in this single doctrine – that the odds are better if you rely only on yourself.
5. I wondered if perhaps I had changed too much.
All my studying, reading, thinking, traveling, had it transformed me into someone who no longer belonged anywhere?
6. You are not fool’s gold, shining only under a particular light.
Whomever you become, whatever you make yourself into, that is who you always were.
7. I think education is really just a process of self-discovery – of developing a sense of self and what you think.
I think of it as this great mechanism of connecting and equalizing.
8. Everything I had worked for, all my years of study, had been to purchase for myself this one privilege: to see and experience more truths than those given to me by my father, and to use those truths to construct my own mind.
9. I began to read – Hume( https://cw2588.blogspot.com/2023/11/david-hume-sayings-quotes-sympathy-wiki.html ), Rousseau( https://cw2588.blogspot.com/2022/11/jean-jacques-rousseau-sayings-quotes.html ), Smith( https://cw2588.blogspot.com/2024/11/the-wealth-of-nations-adam-smith.html ), Godwin( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Godwin ), Wollstonecraft( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Wollstonecraft ) and Mill( https://cw2588.blogspot.com/2022/11/john-stuart-mill-sayings-quotes.html ).
I lost myself in the world they had lived in, the problems they had tried to solve.
I became obsessed with their ideas about the family – with how a person ought to weigh their special obligations to kin against their obligations to society as a whole.
10. I read them to learn what to think, not how to think for myself.
