『아웃사이더 The Outsiders』는 그녀가 대학 1학년 때 출간되어 즉각적인 화제를 불러일으켰으며, 지금까지 천만 권 이상이 팔린 청소년 소설(young-adult novels)의 스테디셀러이자 베스트셀러로 자리잡았다.

이 책은 1983년 프랜시스 코폴라(Francis Ford Coppola) 감독이 청춘 스타들을 대거 등장시켜 영화화했고, 1990년에는 텔레비전 시리즈로 각색되었다.

1988년, 그녀는 ‘오랜 기간 동안 청소년의 진정한 대변인으로 검증받은, 또한 청소년들이 자신의 경험과 감정을 돌아보고 삶을 성찰하도록 해온 책의 작가’에게 주어지는, American Library Association으로부터 “Margaret A. Edwards Award”의 첫 수상자가 되기도 했다.
