어떠한 상황에 놓이더라도 인생에 대한 태도만큼은 자신이 자유롭게 선택할 수 있다.

9. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual.

인생은 궁극적으로 자신의 문제에 대한 올바른 해답을 찾고, 그 답이 각 개인에게 끊임없이 설정(設定)하는 과제를 완수하는 책임을 지는 것을 의미한다.

10. The truth - that Love is the ultimate and highest goal to which man can aspire.

Then I grasped the meaning of the greatest secret that human poetry and human thought and belief have to impart :

The salvation of man is through love and in love.

사랑은 인간이 열망할 수 있는 궁극적이고 가장 높은 목표라는 것은 진실이다.

나는 시(詩)와 생각과 신념이 전해주는 가장 위대한 비밀의 의미를 파악했다.

인간의 구원은 사랑을 통해 이루어지고, 사랑 속에서 펼쳐진다.

11. Don’t aim at success – the more you aim at it and make it a target, the more are going to miss it.

For success, like happiness, cannot be pursued ; it must ensue… as the unintended side-effect of one’s personal dedication to a course greater than oneself.

성공을 겨냥하지 말라.

성공을 겨냥하고 목표로 삼을수록 더욱 놓치게 될 것이다.

행복과 마찬가지로 성공은 추구의 대상이 될 수 없기 때문이다.

성공은 결과로 발생해야 한다.

자기 자신보다 더 큰 과정에 전념함으로써 얻어지는 뜻하지 않은 부산물(副産物)로서 말이다.

※ Viktor Emil Frankl(1905~1997, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viktor_Frankl ) ; 그는 유태인이며 20세기 오스트리아의 신경학자, 정신과 의사(psychiatrist), 심리학자. 홀로코스트의 생존자(Holocaust survivor)였으며 테레지엔슈타트, 아우슈비츠, 카우퍼링, 투르크맨 수용소에서 살아남았다.

1941년에 틸리 그로슬러와 결혼했고 1944년 10월에 아우슈비츠(Auschwitz)로 끌려가게 되고, 1945년 4월 미군에 의해 풀려나게 되었으나 안타깝게도 여동생을 제외한 가족 모두가 사망하였다.

그는 수용소 생활을 하면서 심리학자로서 사람들의 대처와 반응을 관찰한 것을 토대로 로고테라피(logotherapy 意味治療 의미치료)를 창시했으며, 오스트리아 정신요법 제3 학파인 로고테라피 학파의 창시자이다.

로고테라피는 실존주의 및 인본주의 심리학(existential and humanistic psychology) 이론의 일부이다.

그는 실존주의 상담 치료의 핵심 인물이며, 인간성 심리학(인본주의 심리학)자들에게 큰 영향을 주었다.

미국 정신과 협회(American Psychiatric Association)는 종교와 정신과에 대한 중요한 공헌을 인정해 1985년 오스카 피스터상(Oskar Pfister Award)을 그에게 수여했다.

[죽음의 수용소에서 Man's Search for Meaning], [삶의 의미를 찾아서 The Will to Meaning] 등의 저서가 있으며, 그는 이 책들을 쓰면서 존재의 의미의 중요성과 수용소(Nazi concentration camps)에서 계속해서 살아갈 의미를 찾았다.

프란츠 크로이처(Franz Kreutzer)와 [태초에 의미가 있었다(정신분석에서 로고테라피에로) Im anfang war der sinn : von der Psychoanalyse zur Logotherapie] 라는 책을 함께 썼다.
