What did people truly want to say to the world?
I want to convey the true heart of the person published here.
With this mindset, I hope to properly express Hillel the Great's heart.
1. Who does not grow, declines.
성장하지 않는 사람은 쇠퇴한다.
2. If not you, who?
If not now, when?
내가 아니면, 누가 할 것인가?
지금 아니면, 언제?
3. If I am not for myself, who will be for me?
내가 나 자신을 위해 존재하지 않는다면, 누가 나를 대신해 줄 것인가?
4. Judge not thy friend until thou standest in his place.
그 사람의 입장에 처해 보기 전까지는 그를 재단(裁斷)하지 마라.
5. A single candle can light a thousand more without diminishing itself.
촛불 하나는 스스로는 줄어들지 않고 수천 개를 더 밝힐 수 있다.
6. In a place where there are no humans, one must strive to be human.
인간다운 인간이 없는 곳에서는 제대로 된 인간이 되기 위해 노력해야 한다.
7. Take care of yourself - you never know when the world will need you.
자신을 잘 관리하라.
세상이 언제 당신을 필요로 할지 결코 알 수 없다.
8. The more flesh, the more worms ; the more possessions, the more worry.
고기가 많아질수록 벌레가 늘어나고,
소유물이 많아질수록 걱정거리도 늘어난다.
9. Do not say, 'When I have leisure, I will study,' because you may never have leisure.
'여가가 있을 때 공부하겠다'고 말하지 마라. 여가가 없을 수도 있다.
10. What you yourself hate, don't do to your neighbor.
This is the whole law ; the rest is commentary.
Go and study.
