What did people truly want to say to the world?
I want to convey the true heart of the person published here.
With this mindset, I hope to properly express Gerhard Richter's heart.
1. Color is the key to psychology.
색상(色相)은 심리학의 열쇠이다.
2. Gray is the color... the most important of all... absent of opinion, nothing, neither/nor.
회색이... 가장 중요한 색이다...
회색은 특별히 내세울 것도 없고, 무(無)이며, 이것도 저것도 아니다.
3. I paint to make visible the invisible.
나는 보이지 않는 것을 보이게 하기 위해 그림을 그린다.
4. Art is the highest form of hope.
예술은 가장 높은 형태의 희망이다.
5. Art is the way to purity and redemption.
예술은 순수함과 구원으로 가는 길이다.
6. Art is a balance between chaos and control.
예술은 혼돈과 컨트롤 사이의 균형이다.

11. Art shows us how to see things that are constructive and good, and to be an active part of that.

12. When I make a representation of something, this, too, is an analogy to what exists; I make an effort to get a grip on the thing by depicting it.

13. Talk about painting: there’s no point.
By conveying a thing through the medium of language, you change it.
You construct qualities that can be said, and you leave out the ones that can’t be said but are always the most important.
그림에 대해 이야기해봤자 아무런 의미가 없다.
언어라는 매개체를 통해 어떤 것을 전달함으로써, 우리는 그 의미를 제대로 표현해내지 못할 가능성이 있다.
말로 표현하기 어려운 가장 중요한 자질을 우리는 늘 말을 함으로써 놓쳐버릴 수가 있다.
14. Art is the ideal medium for making contact with the transcendental, or at least for getting close to it.
예술은 초월적인 것과 접촉하거나 적어도 초월적 존재 가까이 다가가기에 이상적(理想的)인 매체이다.
15. Picturing things, taking a view, is what makes us human; art is making sense and giving shape to that sense.
It is like the religious search for God.
사물을 그림으로 표현하고, 관점을 취하는 것이 우리를 인간답게 만드는 것이다.
예술은 의미를 부여하고 그 감각에 형태를 부여하는 것이다.
예술은 신에 대한 종교적 탐구와도 같다.
16. Art is not a substitute religion: it is a religion (in the true sense of the word: ‘binding back,’ ‘binding’ to the unknowable, transcending reason, transcendent being).
But the church is no longer adequate as a means of affording experience of the transcendental, and of making religion real - and so art has been transformed from a means into the sole provider of religion: which means religion itself.
예술은 대체 종교가 아니라, 바로 종교이다(단어의 진정한 의미에서: 알 수 없는 것에 '묶어두는', 이성을 초월하는, 초월적인 존재).
하지만 교회는 더 이상 초월적인 것을 경험하게 하고 종교를 현실로 만드는 수단으로 적합하지 않다.
그래서 예술은 수단에서 종교의 유일한 제공자로 변형되었다.
즉, 예술은 종교 자체를 의미한다.
17. Politicians are nauseating by definition...
They can produce nothing, neither a loaf of bread nor a table nor a picture; and this inability to create value, this total inferiority, makes them jealous, vengeful, insolent and a menace to life and limb.
정치인들은 정의(定意)상 구토가 나오는 존재이다...
그들은 아무것도 만들어낼 수 없다. 빵 한 덩어리도, 테이블도, 그림도 말이다.
그리고 가치를 창출할 수 없는 이러한 무능력, 이러한 완전한 열등감이 그들을 질투하게 만들고, 복수심에 불타게 하며, 무례하게 만들고, 우리의 생명과 몸에 위협적인 존재이다.
