1965년 카슈미르의 귀속문제로 Pakistan과 전쟁(Indo-Pakistan War of 1965)이 발발하였을 때, 이를 수습하기 위한 수뇌회담이 1966년 소련령의 Tashkent에서 열렸는데, 그는 여기에 참석하여 정전(停戰)과 외교관계 정상화를 약속하는 공동성명에 서명한 후, 심장병으로 현지에서 사망하였다.

But for us there need be no difficulty or hesitation, no looking to right or left.

Our way is straight and clear-the building up of a socialist democracy at home with freedom and prosperity for all, and the maintenance of world peace and friendship with all nations.

모든 국가의 삶에는 역사의 기로(岐路)에 서서 어느 길을 가야 할지 선택해야 할 때가 온다.

그러나 우리에게는 어려움이나 망설임이 필요하지 않다.

오른쪽이나 왼쪽으로 돌아볼 필요도 없다.

우리의 길은 올바르고 명확하다.

모든 사람을 위한 자유와 번영, 그리고 세계 평화와 모든 국가와의 우호를 유지하는 사회적 민주주의를 국내에서 구축하는 것이다.
