I wanted to be the best in the class, but there was always some other feller who was better; so I thought, It cant be about being the best, it has to be about the drawing itself, what you do with it.
Thats kind of stuck with me.

17. I was taught to confront things you can't avoid.
Death is one of those things.
To live in a society where you're trying not to look at it is stupid because looking at death throws us back into life with more vigour and energy.
The fact that flowers don't last for ever makes them beautiful.
나는 피할 수 없는 일에 맞서는 법을 배웠다.
죽음은 그런 것들 중 하나이다.
죽음을 바라보는 것이 우리를 더 활력적이고 에너지 넘치는 삶으로 되돌려 놓기 때문에 죽음을 보지 않으려고 노력하는 사회에서 사는 것은 어리석은 일이다.

18. For me, art is always a kind of theater.
When I started the spot paintings I made them as an endless series.
But I was never serious about it being an endless series.
It was just an implied endless series.
The theater means you just have to make it look good for that moment in the spotlight.
나에게 예술은 항상 일종의 연극이다.
내가 스팟 페인팅을 시작했을 때 나는 끝없는 시리즈로 그렸다.
하지만 나는 그것이 끝없는 시리즈가 되는 것에 대해 진지하게 생각하지 않았다.
