With this mindset, I hope to properly express Marianne Elliott's heart.

1. I'm very much of the opinion that theatre is a collective art form, not just one person's vision.

연극은 한 개인의 비전이 아니라, 공동의 예술 형식이라고 생각된다.

2. If you can't see it, you can't be it.

It's just having those brilliant women break out and do something - then other girls can say, 'I can do it, too!‘

볼 수 없으면 될 수 없다.

뛰어난 여성들이 나서서 무언가를 해내는 모습을 보면 다른 소녀들이 '나도 할 수 있어!'라고 말할 수 있게 된다.

3. Whether you're a man or a woman, life can be very, very difficult and confusing and desperate, and it's life-enhancing to know that somehow, there is a way through it.

누구에게나 인생은 아주 어렵고 혼란스러우며 절망적일 수 있다.

하지만 어떻게든 헤쳐나갈 길이 있다는 것을 아는 것이 인생에 활력을 불어넣어 준다.

4. For me, 'Angels in America' is not really about AIDS.

For me, it's a metaphor for anybody who is struggling with serious illness or having to face their own demise.

All of the characters face some form of destruction in themselves.

나에게 이 작품은 심각한 질병과 싸우거나 자신의 죽음을 마주해야 하는 모든 사람을 위한 은유이다.

5. I worked in casting for about five years before I became a director, and that taught me a huge amount because you never actually will see the character walk through the door - and if you do, then you have to be slightly suspicious of that.

나는 감독이 되기 전에 캐스팅 담당자로 5년 정도 일했는데, 그 경험이 정말 많은 것을 가르쳐줬다.

6. You have to lead by example.

You have to be the calmest person in the room.

You have to be very open.

I think the qualities of a director are to enable and to find the best in everybody.

솔선수범해야 한다.

룸 안에서 가장 침착한 사람이 되어야 한다.

매우 개방적이어야 한다.

감독의 자질은 모든 사람의 잠재력을 이끌어내고 최대한 발휘할 수 있도록 돕는 것이라고 생각한다.

7. The plays I choose to work on are about having masks.

We all have masks in life, but there is a different inner life going on.

The audience has to work hard to see what is going on.

I love what is not on display.

내가 선택하는 작품들은 가면을 쓰는 것에 관한 이야기이다.

우리 모두는 인생살이에서 가면을 쓰고 살아가지만, 가면 안에는 또 다른 내면적인 삶이 존재한다.

관객은 그 가면 뒤에 숨겨진 진실을 파악하기 위해 많은 노력을 기울여야 한다.

나는 드러나지 않는 것들을 좋아한다.

8. It's impossible to feel the creative juices flowing if you're always worried about the end result.

I think really, really good work comes out of people being quite open, not stressed, really exploring, trying to be imaginative, without worrying too much about the end result.

결과에 대해 끊임없이 걱정한다면 창의적인 영감(靈感)이 샘솟는 것을 느낄 수 없다.

정말 훌륭한 작품은 사람들이 마음을 열고, 스트레스 없이, 진정으로 탐구하고, 상상력을 발휘하며, 결과에 너무 연연(戀戀)하지 않을 때 나온다고 생각한다.

9. It's a tremendous asset if you have a visual eye because you can make huge visual statements in a very theatrical way and play to the strength of theatre.

But the high end of directing is working with actors and making the acting the best it can be.

시각적인 감각이 뛰어나다면 엄청난 자산이 된다.

정말로 연극적인 방식으로 강렬한 시각적 효과를 만들어낼 수도 있고, 연극의 강점을 최대한 활용할 수도 있기 때문이다.

하지만 연출의 최고봉은 배우들과 함께 작업하며 그들의 연기(演技)를 최고로 끌어올리는 데 있다.

10. I feel that if you're going to do theater, you've really got to throw yourself into the deep end.

You have to commit your whole life and soul to it to make it the best it could ever be because theater can truly change people in lots of different ways.

But I also think it can bore people to death, and it's quite a fine line between those two things.

나는 연극을 하려면 정말 온 힘을 다해 뛰어들어야 한다고 생각한다.

연극은 사람들을 다양한 방식으로 변화시킬 수 있기 때문에, 최고의 작품을 만들기 위해서는 온 마음과 영혼을 바쳐야 한다.

하지만 연극이 사람들을 지루하게 만들 수도 있다는 생각도 든다.

이 둘 사이의 경계는 참 미묘하다.

11. Horses are wild animals, essentially, and they're not there to do what humans want them to - they can be browbeaten or cajoled or trained, but they don't hear English; they're not obedient most of the time.

말은 본질적으로 야생 동물이기 때문에 인간이 원하는 대로 움직이도록 길들여진 존재가 아니다.

위협하거나 달래거나 훈련시킬 수는 있지만, 언어를 알아듣지 못하고 대부분의 경우 순종적이지 않다.
