10. I never think of the camera until the scene has been almost lit.

I think the camera is the last thing.

You see, to think og the camera first is like tailoring the suit and then looking for a person who will fit it.

I’d rather get the person and then take the measurements and make a suit for him.

나는 장면 조명이 거의 완성될 때까지 카메라 생각을 전혀 하지 않는다.

카메라는 내게 있어서 가장 마지막에 고려하는 요소이다.

카메라를 먼저 생각하는 건 마치 정장을 먼저 맞추고 나서 그 정장에 맞는 사람을 찾는 것과도 같다.

차라리 사람을 먼저 찾고 치수를 재서, 그 사람에게 맞는 정장을 만드는 편이 낫다.

11. I think casting is very important.

If you have the right type of person for the role, that’s already halfway to the success.

You have the idea of the character and you search for an actor who fits that.

You see quickly that it’s going to work with some actors and not with others.

You make mistakes, but not often.

For me, good casting is more important than an actor’s ability.

You often look for the best possible actors, that’s true.

But if I come across an actor who is perhaps less talented than another, but perfect for my character, then it’s him I’m going to hire.

나는 캐스팅이 아주 중요하다고 생각한다.

배역에 맞는 사람을 찾는다면 이미 성공의 절반은 달성한 셈이다.

캐릭터에 대한 구상이 있으면, 나는 그에 맞는 배우를 찾는다.

그 배역이 어떤 배우와는 잘 어울리고, 어떤 배우와는 안 어울리는지 금방 알게 된다.

물론 실수를 할 수도 있지만, 자주 있는 일은 아니다.

내게는 좋은 캐스팅이 배우의 연기력보다 더 중요하다.

물론 최고의 배우를 찾는 게 중요하다.

하지만 다른 배우보다 연기력은 떨어지더라도 내 캐릭터에 완벽하게 어울리는 배우를 만난다면, 나는 그 배우를 캐스팅할 것이다.

12. [advice to aspiring filmmakers]

It’s a question of patience and perseverance.

You can’t teach talent, but you can tell someone how to sustain the adversity which is an enemy constantly on set.

Whatever type of film you make, it requires a crew, it requires financing, it requires a lot of people around you.

And those people – even if they are all with you, even if they are all friendly, and even if they agree with the final result – they still have their personal agendas.

They see things differently than you do.

They have families and children and girlfriends and they’re horny.

So what you really need is to be patient and to be able to stand all those problems.

[영화감독 지망생들에게 주는 조언]

인내와 끈기가 중요하다.

재능은 가르쳐드릴 수 없지만, 촬영장에서 끊임없이 마주하는 어려운 역경(逆境)을 견뎌내는 법은 가르쳐드릴 수 있다.

어떤 장르의 영화를 만들든 스태프, 자금, 주변의 많은 사람들이 필요하다.

그 사람들은 모두 당신과 함께하고, 모두 친절하며, 최종 결과물에 동의한다고 해도, 각자 개인적인 목표를 가지고 있다.

그들은 당신과 다른 시각으로 세상을 바라본다.

그들에게도 가족과 자녀, 지인이 있고, 성적인 욕구도 있다.

그러니 정말 필요한 것은 인내심을 갖고 이러한 모든 문제들을 견뎌낼 수 있는 능력이다.
