그는 모더니즘 건축의 마지막 건축가로 알려져 있으며 돌, 콘크리트, 유리, 강철 등을 이용해 추상적인 형태를 주로 만들어냈다.

​

그는 중국 광저우에서 유복한 가정에서 태어났으며, 그의 아버지는 은행가로 중국은행 은행장과 중국중앙은행 총재를 역임했다.

18세에 미국으로 이주하여 Massachusetts Institute of Technology에서 건축학 학사 학위를 받았다.

Harvard Graduate School of Design(GSD)에서 건축학 석사 학위를 받았으며, 이후 하버드 대학교의 교수를 역임하였고 103세에 타계했다.

​

주요 건축물로는 미국 국립 대기연구센터, 타이완 퉁하이대학 루스 예배당, 미국 내셔널 갤러리 동관, 인디애나 미술관, 홍콩 중국은행 타워, 미국 로큰롤 명예의 전당 등이 있다.
