※ Richard Dawkins (1941년생, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Dawkins , https://richarddawkins.net ) ; 영국의 동물 행동학자, 진화 생물학자(evolutionary biologist), 대중과학 저술가, 무신론자(atheist), 인본주의자, 회의주의자, 과학적 합리주의자, 브라이트 운동 지지자이다.

2006년에 발표한 그의 책 《The God Delusion》에서 그는 초자연적 창조자가 거의 확실히 존재하지 않으며 종교적 신앙은 굳어진 착각에 불과하다고 주장했다.

그는 만물을 신이 창조했다는 종교적 믿음인 창조과학에 단호한 비판적 자세를 가지고 있는데, 창조과학을 불합리하고 지성을 축소시키는 잘못된 것이라고 비판했다.

2004년 옥스퍼드의 베일리얼 칼리지(Balliol College)는 그의 이름을 딴 도킨스 상을 만들어 인간에 의해 멸종위기에 빠진 동물의 행동양식과 복지에 기여하는 논문을 발표한 사람에게 수상하고 있다.

《The Selfish Gene》에서 그는 밈(Meme ; 한 사람이나 집단에게서 다른 지성으로 생각 혹은 믿음이 전달될 때 전달되는 모방 가능한 사회적 단위를 총칭한다)이라는 용어를 도입했다.

Dawkins의 주장 :

a. 창조론과 진화론의 다툼은 작은 충돌이다.

진정한 충돌은 이것을 넘어서 있다.

b. 나는 NOMA(non overlapping magisterium)에 동의하지 않는다. 기독교는 과학적인 주장을 하며 과학의 검증을 받아야 한다.

Lennox의 반론 :

a. 나 역시 NOMA에 동의하지 않는다. 도킨스의 말대로 기독교에는 검증과 반증이 가능한 부분이 있다.

b. 과학은 무신론보다 기독교를 지지한다.

무신론에서는 우리의 뇌가 유도되지 않은 진화에 의해 형성되었다고 생각하기 때문에 우리가 실재를 파악할 수 있다는 보장이 없다.

반면에 기독교는 세상과 뇌를 만든 분이 동일하기 때문에 과학이 가능하다.

c. 우주는 미세한 조정을 필요로 하며 창조주를 연상케 한다.

이를 해결하기 위해 학자들이 다중 우주를 거론하기도 했지만 근본적인 문제는 해결하지 못했다.

d. 아노 펜지어스는 '빅뱅이론은 모세 5경과 시편만 보고서도 추론이 가능한 것이다.'고 했다.

하지만 빅뱅이론이 처음 보고되었을 때 매덕스를 비롯한 주류 과학자들은 빅뱅이론에 반대했었다.

성경에는 과학적인 예측이 일부 담겨 있고, 만약 과학자들이 이를 진지하게 생각했다면 빅뱅은 그보다 훨씬 일찍 발견되었을 것이다.

1. Science is the poetry of reality.

과학은 리얼리티에 대한 시(詩)이다.

2. Let us try to teach generosity and altruism, because we are born selfish.

3. I don't understand why so many people who are sophisticated in science go on believing in God.
