What did people truly want to say to the world?
I want to convey the true heart of the person published here.
With this mindset, I hope to properly express Catherynne Morgan Valente's heart.
1. When one is traveling, everything looks brighter and lovelier.
여행할 때는 모든 것이 더 밝고 아름답게 보인다.
2. It is well known that reading quickens the growth of a heart like nothing else.
독서가 다른 어떤 것보다도 마음의 성장을 촉진한다는 것은 잘 알려진 사실이다.
3. A book is a door, you know. Always and forever.
A book is a door into another place and another heart and another world.
아시다시피, 책은 언제나 영원한 문이다.
책은 다른 장소, 다른 마음, 다른 세상으로 통하는 문이다.
4. Everybody's strange everywhere.
Most of the trick of being a social animal is pretending you're not.
But who do you fool? Nobody worth talking to.
어디서나 사람들은 모두 이상하다.
사회적 동물이 되는 비결의 대부분은 그렇지 않은 척하는 것이다.
하지만 누굴 바보로 아나? 대화할 가치가 있는 사람은 아무도 없다.
5. Love can come only with time and sentience.
We learn it as we learn language--and some never learn it well.
Love is like a tool, though it is not a tool; something strange and wonderful to use, difficult to master, and mysterious in its provenance.
사랑은 오직 시간과 감각을 통해서만 올 수 있다.
우리는 언어를 배우듯이 사랑을 배우지만, 어떤 사람들은 사랑을 제대로 배우지 못한다.
사랑은 도구와 같지만, 도구는 아니다.
사용하기에 이상하고도 경이로우며, 마스터하기도 어렵고, 그 출처가 신비롭다.
6. For there are two kinds of forgiveness in the world: the one you practice because everything really is all right, and what went before is mended.
The other kind of forgiveness you practice because someone needs desperately to be forgiven, or because you need just as badly to forgive them, for a heart can grab hold of old wounds and go sour as milk over them.
세상에는 두 가지 종류의 용서가 있다.
하나는 모든 것이 정말 괜찮고, 이전에 있었던 일이 해결되었기 때문에 행하는 용서이다.
다른 하나는 누군가 절실히 용서 받기를 원하거나, 나도 마찬가지로 절실히 그들을 용서하고 싶어서 행하는 용서이다.
마음은 오래된 상처를 붙잡고 마치 우유처럼 시큼해질 수 있기 때문이다.
7. Do you suppose you will look the same when you are an old woman as you do now?
Most folk have three faces—the face they get when they’re children, the face they own when they’re grown, and the face they’ve earned when they’re old.
But when you live as long as I have, you get many more.
I look nothing like I did when I was a wee thing of thirteen.
You get the face you build your whole life, with work and loving and grieving and laughing and frowning.
노인이 되어도 지금과 똑같을 거라고 생각하나요?
대부분의 사람들은 세 가지 얼굴을 가지고 있다.
어렸을 때의 얼굴, 성인이 되어 얻은 얼굴, 그리고 늙어서 얻은 얼굴이다.
하지만 나처럼 오래 살면 훨씬 더 많은 얼굴을 갖게 될 것이다.
나는 열세 살 때와는 전혀 다른 모습이다.
사람은 일, 사랑, 슬픔, 웃음, 찡그림 등으로 평생 자신의 얼굴을 만들어 가는 것이다.
8. At the bottom of philosophy something very true and very desperate whispers: Everyone is hungry all the time. Everyone is starving.
Everyone wants so much, much more than they can stomach, but the appetite doesn't converse much with the stomach.
Everyone is hungry and not only for food - for comfort and love and excitement and the opposite of being alone.
Almost everything awful anyone does is to get those things and keep them.
철학의 밑바닥에는 아주 진실 되고도 절박한 무언가가 속삭인다.
모든 사람은 항상 배고프다. 모두가 굶주리고 있다.
감당할 수 있는 것보다 훨씬 더 많은 것을 모두가 원하지만, 식욕은 위장과 별로 소통하지 않는다.
모든 사람이 배고프지만, 음식 만을 원하는 것은 아니다.
편안함과 사랑과 기분 좋기를 원하며, 혼자가 되는 것의 반대되는 것을 원한다.
사람들이 저지르는 거의 모든 끔찍한 짓은 바로 그런 것들을 손에 넣고 싶어 하고 간직하려고 하기 때문이다.
9. Fairy tales have always been about getting through the worst of everything, the darkest and the deepest and the bloodiest of events.
They are about surviving, and what you look like when you emerge from the trial.
The reason we keep telling fairy tales over and over, that we need to keep telling them, is that the trials change.
So the stories change too, and the heroines and villains and magical objects, to keep them true.
Fairy tales are the closets where the world keeps its skeletons.
동화(童話)는 언제나 모든 것 중 최악의 상황, 가장 어둡고 깊으며 피비린내 나는 사건을 헤쳐 나가는 것에 관한 것이었다.
동화는 살아남는 것에 관한 것이고, 시련을 극복했을 때 어떤 모습일지에 관한 것이다.
우리가 동화를 계속해서 반복해서 이야기하는 이유, 그리고 계속해서 이야기해야 하는 이유는 시련이 변하기 때문이다.
따라서 스토리도 변하고, 주인공과 악당, 마법의 물건들도 진실을 유지하기 위해 변한다.
동화는 세상이 뼈대를 보관하는 옷장과도 같다.
10. Wishes of one's old life wither and shrivel like old leaves if they are not replaced with new wishes when the world changes.
And the world always changes.
Wishes get slimy, and their colors fade, and soon they are just mud, like all the rest of the mud, and not wishes at all, but regrets.
The trouble is, not everyone can tell when they ought to launder their wishes.
Even when one finds oneself in Fairyland and not at home at all, it is not always so easy to remember to catch the world in it's changing and change with it.
세상이 변해도 새로운 소망으로 채워지지 않으면, 옛 삶에 대한 소망은 마치 오래된 나뭇잎처럼 시들어 말라 버린다.
세상은 항상 변한다.
소망은 끈적끈적해지고, 색깔이 바래며, 곧 다른 모든 진흙처럼 그저 진흙이 되어 소망이 아닌 후회만 남는다.
문제는 모든 사람이 언제 자신의 소망을 새롭게 해야 할지 알지 못한다는 것이다.
설령 자신이 동화 나라에 있고 집이 아닌 곳에 있을 때조차도, 세상의 변화 속에 세상을 담아내고 세상과 함께 변화하는 것을 기억하는 것이 항상 쉬운 일은 아니다.
