What did people truly want to say to the world?
I want to convey the true heart of the person published here.
With this mindset, I hope to properly express Renzo Piano's heart.
1. If you have total freedom, then you are in trouble.
It's much better when you have some obligation, some discipline, some rules.
When you have no rules, then you start to build your own rules.
완전한 자유는 오히려 문제가 생긴다.
어느 정도의 의무, 규율, 규칙이 있는 것이 훨씬 낫다.
규칙이 없으면 스스로 규칙을 만들어야 한다.
2. Knowing how to do things not just with the head, but with the hands as well: this might seem a programmatic and ideological goal.
It is not. It is a way of safeguarding creative freedom.
머리 뿐 아니라 손으로도 일을 처리하는 방법을 아는 것, 이것은 프로그램적이고 이념적인 목표처럼 보일 수도 있다.
하지만 그렇지 않다. 그것은 창조적 자유를 지키는 방법이다.
3. My inspiration came from the land, ... and, of course, from Paul Klee . . . and the poetics of his paintings.

4. Every year I spend one month just sailing, but I still work when Im on the boat.

5. In a way I spend my entire life stealing from everything - from the past, from cities I love, from where I grew up - grabbing things, taking not only from architecture but from Italy, art, writing, poetry, music.

6. One of the great beauties of architecture is that each time, it is like life starting all over again.

7. You can put down a bad book; you can avoid listening to bad music; but you cannot miss the ugly tower block opposite your house.

8. Light has not just intensity, but also a vibration, which is capable of roughening a smooth material, of giving a three-dimensional quality to a flat surface.
빛은 강도(剛度)뿐 아니라 진동도 가지고 있다.
빛의 진동은 매끄러운 재질을 거칠게 만들고, 평평한 표면에 입체감을 부여할 수 있다.
9. Cities are beautiful because they are created slowly; they are made by time.
A city is born from a tangle of monuments and infrastructures , culture and market, national history and everyday stories.
It takes 500 years to create a city, 50 to create a neighborhood.
도시가 아름다운 이유는 천천히 만들어지기 때문이다.
도시는 세월이 만들어낸다.
도시는 기념물과 기반 시설, 문화와 시장, 국가의 역사와 일상의 스토리들이 뒤얽혀 탄생한다.
도시가 만들어지는 데는 500년 정도가 걸리고, 동네가 만들어지는 데는 50년 정도가 걸린다.
10. Architects spend an entire life with this unreasonable idea that you can fight against gravity.
건축가들은 중력에 맞서 싸울 수 있다는 비현실적인 생각을 품고 평생을 살아간다.
11. Architects have to dream, we have to search for our Atlantises, to be explorers, adventurers, and yet to build responsibly and well.
건축가는 꿈을 꿔야 한다.
우리만의 아틀란티스를 찾아야 하고, 탐험가이자 모험가가 되어야 하지만, 동시에 책임감 있고 훌륭하게 건축해야 한다.
12. A builder is like a little god - somebody who does things, doesnt just draw things.
빌더는 마치 작은 신(神)과도 같다.
빌더는 단순히 그림만 그리는 사람이 아니라, 실제로 무언가를 만들어내는 사람이다.
13. As an architect you are a builder.
You are of course more than a builder.
You need to be a militant, you have to be a poet, you have to be a visionary, you have to be an artist.
But certainly you have to be a builder.
Everything starts from there.
건축가는 빌더이다.
물론 건축가는 단순한 빌더 이상(以上)이다.
건축가는 투사여야 하고, 시인이어야 하며, 선구자여야 하고, 예술가여야 한다.
하지만 무엇보다도 빌더여야 한다.
모든 것은 거기서부터 시작된다.
14. There is something about giving everything to your profession.
In Italian, an obsession is not necessarily negative.
Its the art of putting all your energy into one thing; its the art of transforming even what you eat for lunch into architecture.
직업에 모든 것을 바치는 것에는 특별한 무언가가 있다.
이탈리아어에서 '집착'이 반드시 부정적인 의미는 아니다.
그것은 모든 에너지를 한 가지에 쏟아붓는 예술이며, 점심으로 먹는 음식조차 건축으로 승화시키는 예술이다.
15. Architecture is art.
I don't think you should say that too much, but it is art.
I mean, architecture is many, many things.
Architecture is science, is technology, is geography, is typography, is anthropology, is sociology, is art, is history.
You know all this comes together.
Architecture is a kind of bouillabaisse, an incredible bouillabaisse.
And, by the way, architecture is also a very polluted art in the sense that it's polluted by life, and by the complexity of things.
건축은 예술이다.
너무 자주 말할 필요는 없겠지만, 건축은 분명 예술이다.
건축은 정말 많은 것을 포함한다.
건축은 과학이고, 기술이며, 지리학이고, 활자 조형학이며, 인류학이고, 사회학이며, 예술이고, 역사이다.
이 모든 것이 하나로 합쳐진다.
건축은 일종의 부야베스(프랑스 마르세유의 명물 생선 스튜 요리), 그것도 아주 놀라운 부야베스이다.
그리고 건축은 인생과 삼라만상의 복잡성으로 오염된, 진짜 제대로 오염된 예술이기도 하다.
16. Architecture is art, but art vastly contaminated by many other things.
Contaminated in the best sense of the word – fed, fertilised by many things.
건축은 예술이지만, 다른 많은 것들에 의해 크게 오염된 예술이다.
긍정적인 의미에서 오염되었다는 것은, 많은 것들로부터 영양을 공급받고 비옥(肥沃)해졌다는 뜻이다.
