따라서 자율적 시민이 없는 민주주의와 자율적 사회, 즉 개인의 자유와 민주주의 사용 방식에 대한 개인의 책임이 부여되지 않는 자율 사회는 없으며, 있을 수도 없다.

Democracy rests on the freedom of its citizens, and citizens rest their confidence of being free and the courage to be free on the democracy of their polis.

The two make each other and are made in the process of that making.

자유는 민주주의의 가치와 분리하여 생각할 수는 없지만, 또 다른 가치이다.
