The more I pursue goodness, the more I am obsessed with evil.
The more I seek success, the more I must dread failure.
The harder I cling to life, the more terrifying death becomes.
The more I value anything, the more obsessed I become with its loss.
단순한 사실은, 우리는 갈등의 세계에 살고 있으면서 갈등이 없는 세계에 살고 있다는 것이다. 왜냐하면 우리는 경계라는 세계에 살고 있기 때문이다.
모든 경계선은 또한 전선(戰線)이기 때문에, 인간의 어려움은 다음과 같다.
경계가 굳어질수록 전투도 더욱 거세진다.
쾌락에 매달릴수록 고통이 더 두려워진다.
선을 추구할수록 악에 더 집착하게 되기 쉽다.
성공을 추구할수록 실패를 두려워하게 된다.
삶에 더 열심히 매달릴수록 죽음은 더 무서운 존재로 다가온다.
어떤 것이든 소중하게 여길수록 그 손실에 더 빠져들게 된다.
