Jungle Book은 인도의 정글에서 성장한 늑대 소년 모글리가 펼치는 환상적인 모험을 중심으로 여러 동물들의 이야기를 담은 소설 모음집이다.

인간과 동물의 필연적 상호관계를 전제로 하는 《The Jungle Book》은, 인간과 동물의 경계를 떠나 모두가 어울려 살아가야만 하는 사회에서 나타나는 수많은 삶의 모습을 정글이라는 세상을 통해 보여주고 있다.

이 책 속에 등장하는 동물 주인공들은 우리 주변에서 볼 수 있는 다양한 인간 군상을 대변하며, 그들이 모여 살아가는 모습은 우리 사회의 단면을 상징한다.

인도의 정글, 이곳의 불청객인 호랑이 쉬어 칸의 먹잇감이었던 인간 아기가 늑대 가족의 도움으로 목숨을 건진다. 인간 아기는 모글리라는 이름을 얻고 늑대 무리에 섞여 정글에서 살아간다.

​

표범 바기라와 곰 발루에게 정글의 언어와 살아가는 방식을 배우며 자라난 모글리는 갖가지 놀라운 모험을 겪으며, 정글의 법칙을 무시하고 호시탐탐 정글을 손아귀에 쥐고 싶어하는 숙적 호랑이 쉬어 칸을 처치한다.

​

그 후 모글리는 인간 마을에서 잠시 살았을 때 자신을 보살펴준 메스와와 그 남편이 마을 사람들에게 악마로 몰려 죽을 위기에 처했다는 소식을 듣고, 코끼리 하티 무리 및 정글 동물들과 연합해 마을을 공격하는 한편 메스와 부부를 탈출시킨다.

​

동물들에게 짓밟힌 마을이 정글이 되어버리자 모글리는 진정한 정글의 영웅이자 관리자가 된다. 몇 년이 더 흐른 후 잔인한 붉은 개 무리가 정글을 침공하고, 이 전쟁 중 늑대 무리의 지도자 우카일라가 죽음을 맞는다.

우카일라의 예언대로 본능적인 이끌림에 인간의 마을을 다시 찾아간 모글리는 그곳에서 인간 어머니인 메스와를 다시 만나고 인간들의 세계로 돌아갈 것을 결심한다.
