그는 문학 평론과 미학(美學) 관련 논문도 썼고, 특히 날카로운 경구(警句)를 다수 남겼다.

그의 작품은 특히 제 2차 세계 대전 이후 정체성을 창조하는 용도로 사용되었기 때문에, 그는 오스트리아의 국민 시인으로 명명되었다( Due to the identity-creating use of his works, especially after World War II, he was named as the national poet of Austria ).
