※ Empedocles (BC. 494~BC. 443, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empedocles ) ; 소크라테스( https://cw2588.blogspot.com/2022/11/sokratessocrates-sayings-quotes.html ) 이전 시대의 그리스 철학자( a Greek pre-Socratic philosopher )이다.

그의 철학은 고전적 4원소의 우주 발생론을 창안한 것으로 가장 잘 알려져 있다( Empedocles' philosophy is best known for originating the cosmogonic theory of the four classical elements ).

그는 또한 요소를 각각 혼합하고 분리하는 사랑과 투쟁이라고 부르는 힘을 제안했다(He also proposed forces he called Love and Strife which would mix and separate the elements, respectively).

For as I said before in declaring the ends of my words: Twofold is the truth I shall speak; for at one time there grew to be the one alone out of many, and at another time it separated so that there were many out of the one; fire and water and earth and boundless height of air, and baneful Strife apart from these, balancing each of them, and Love among them, their equal in length and breadth.

물, 불, 흙, 공기 이들 4원소의 투쟁과 사랑을 통하여 결합과 분리가 진행되는 것이다.

10. The force that unites the elements to become all things is Love, also called Aphrodite; Love brings together dissimilar elements into a unity, to become a composite thing.

Love is the same force that human beings find at work in themselves whenever they feel joy, love and peace.

Strife, on the other hand, is the force responsible for the dissolution of the one back into its many, the four elements of which it was composed.

요소들을 결합하여 만물을 이루는 힘은 아프로디테( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aphrodite )라고도 불리는 사랑이다.

사랑은 서로 다른 요소들을 하나로 모아 하나의 복합적인 사물로 만든다.

사랑은 인간이 기쁨, 사랑, 평화를 느낄 때마다 스스로 작용하는 것과 동일한 힘이다.

반면에 투쟁은 하나를 다시 여러 요소, 즉 그것을 구성하는 4요소로 해체시키는 역할을 하는 힘이다.
