※ Parmenides of Elea(BC 6세기 후반 ~ BC 5세기 초반, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parmenides ) ; Elea 출신(엘레아학파)의 소크라테스 이전 그리스 철학자{ a pre-Socratic Greek philosopher from Elea in Magna Graecia }이다.

그는 존재론(存在論)과 형이상학(形而上學)의 창시자{the founder of Ontology & Metaphysics}로서 '형이상학의 아버지'로 지칭되며, 서양 철학에 큰 영향을 미친 사람이다.

Heraclitus가 만물의 근원을 '변화'로 보았는데, Parmenides는 그와는 대척점(對蹠點)에 있는 철학자라고 할 수 있다.

왜냐하면 그는 Heraclitus가 말한 '변화' 자체를 인정하지 않았기 때문이다.

Parmenides는 세상은 하나의 변하지 않는 물질로 이루어져 있다고 믿었다.

이 영원하고 불가분의 존재가 유일한 참된 실재(實在)이며, 그 밖의 모든 것은 허상이나 겉모습에 불과하다.

그는 실재의 변화와 다양성을 부정했으며, 오직 변하지 않는 실재만이 존재한다고 주장했다.

그의 알려진 유일한 작품은 원제를 알 수 없지만, 종종 On Nature라고 불리는 시{The single known work by Parmenides is a poem whose original title is unknown but which is often referred to as On Nature}이다.

Platon에게 끼친 그의 영향력을 통해 그는 서양 철학의 전체 역사에 영향을 미쳤다{ Parmenides has been considered the founder of ontology and has, through his influence on Plato, influenced the whole history of Western philosophy }.
