※ Freda Josephine Baker(1906~1975, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josephine_Baker ) ; 미국 태생의 프랑스 엔터테이너(entertainer), 뮤직홀(music hall) artist, 레지스탕스(resistance) 인물, 민권운동가이다.

주 활동 무대는 유럽이었으며, 프랑스에 입양되었고 초기에는 댄서로 유명했다. 부친은 스페인 사람이며 모친이 흑인이다.

그녀는 아주 가난하게 자랐으며 8세 때부터 춤을 추기 시작했고, 1925년에 파리에서 찰스턴(Charleston)을 추어 센세이션을 일으켰다.

검은색 피부를 유행시켰고 구슬 목걸이, 팔찌, 앵클릿(anklet 짧은 양말), 밝은 색의 글러브, 프린지(fringe, 천의 올을 뽑아 몇 올씩 묶은 것)와 화려한 색깔의 옷을 유행시켰다.

수많은 예술가들에게 영감을 준 뮤즈였으며 F. 스코트 피츠제럴드(F. Scott Fitzgerald, https://cw2588.blogspot.com/2022/11/f-scott-fitzgeraldf-sayings-quotes.html ), 파블로 피카소(Pablo Picasso, https://cw2588.blogspot.com/2022/11/pablo-picasso-sayings-quotes-wikipedia.html ), 크리스찬 디올(Christian Dior, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_Dior ) 등이 그녀에게서 예술적인 아름다움을 발견했다.

그녀는 흑인으로는 최초로 메이저 급 영화에서 주연을 맡았는데, 주주(Zouzou)의 타이틀 롤로 상대역은 장 가뱅(Jean Gabin)이었다.

그녀는 자기 가족을 “레인보우 부족(The Rainbow Tribe)”이라고 불렀다. 그녀에게는 열두 명의 자녀가 있었는데 여러 나라로부터 아이들을 입양했다. 그 중에는 우리나라에서 입양한 전쟁고아 출신의 진호(Jeannot)도 있었다. 프랑스뿐만 아니라 일본, 콜롬비아, 핀란드, 알제리 등 다양한 국적의 아이들이었다.

그녀는 제2차 세계 대전 중에 프랑스 레지스탕스를 도운 것으로 알려져 있다.

1930년에 카지노 드 파리(Casino de Paris)의 레뷰(Revu – 풍자극, 익살극)에서 두 개의 사랑(J'ai Deux Amours) 등을 불러 크게 성공하였으며, 생애 후반에는 로마 가톨릭으로 개종하였다.

그녀는 1975년 사망했는데 프랑스 정부는 그녀의 장례식을 성대하게 치러주었다.

마들렌 성당에서 열린 장례식은 프랑스 군대가 사열하고 군악대의 음악이 울려 퍼졌다.

그녀의 유해는 몬테카를로의 묘지에 안장되었다.

그녀가 파산 위기에 처했을 때 경제적인 도움을 주기도 했던 지인(知人)인 그레이스 켈리(Grace Patricia Kelly)가 왕비로 있던 곳이다.

참고로 파리 리옹역 가까이 세느강 주변에 조세핀 베이커 수영장(Piscine Joséphine Baker)이라는 곳이 있는데, 꽤 인기가 있는 수영장이며 남녀 혼용 샤워실에서 수영복을 입고 샤워할 수 있는 곳이다.
