그는 동화 《오즈의 마법사 The Wonderful Wizard of Oz》를 1900년부터 1919년까지 총 14편 발표했다.
《The Wonderful Wizard of Oz》는 작가의 사망 이후에도 40편 넘게 이야기가 이어질 정도로 사랑을 받았으며, 영화와 만화영화로도 만들어졌다.
특히 만화영화 '오즈의 마법사'는 한국방송에서 어린이 프로그램으로 방영된 바 있다.
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz는 그 이후에 연극, 영화, TV 연속물, 온갖 선물용품으로 만들어져 100여년이 지난 지금까지도 어린이와 어른들에게 열렬한 사랑을 받고 있다.
그는 이 책의 출간 후에 후속편을 기다리는 어린이들의 산더미 같은 편지를 받고 계속해서 오즈 시리즈(List of Oz books)를 쓸 수밖에 없었다. 그 책들은 현재까지도 전 세계의 명작고전으로 널리 읽혀지고 있다.
학자 중에는 그가 페미니즘을 지지하여 진취적인 여성상을 많이 등장시켰다는 해석을 하는 사람도 있다.
