그녀는 8살 때부터 청각 장애가 시작되었고 12살에 완전히 청각을 잃으면서도( Glennie has been profoundly deaf since the age of 12, having started to lose her hearing at the age of 8 ), 영국 왕립음악원( Royal Academy of Music )을 졸업하고 세계 유수의 타악기 연주자로 활약하였다.
그녀는 2021년 7월 Ian Wood 경의 뒤를 이어 Robert Gordon University의 총장으로 임명되었다( Glennie was named as Chancellor of Robert Gordon University, succeeding Sir Ian Wood in July 2021 ).

레슨을 요청했는데 나한테 딱 맞는 것 같았다.
8. Hearing is a form of touch.
I could hear less through the ears but more through the body.
You feel it through your body, and sometimes it almost hits your face.

귀로 듣는 소리는 적지만, 몸으로 듣는 소리는 더 많았다.
몸을 통해서 소리를 느끼는데, 가끔은 소리가 거의 얼굴에 와 닿기도 한다.
9. Music is about communication...
It isn't just something that maybe physically sounds good or orally sounds interesting; it's something far, far deeper than that.
음악은 소통이다...
음악은 단순히 물리적으로 좋게 들리거나 구두(口頭)로 흥미롭게 들리는 것이 아니다.
음악은 그것보다 훨씬 더 깊은 것이다.
10. The human body and mind are tremendous forces that are continually amazing scientists and society.
Therefore, we have no choice but to keep an open mind as to what the human being can achieve.
인간의 몸과 마음은 과학자와 사회를 끊임없이 놀라게 하는 엄청난 힘이다.
그러므로 인간이 무엇을 성취할 수 있는지에 대해 열린 마음을 가질 수밖에 없다.
11. I suppose I don't hear things, but I listen, if you know what I mean.
And there is a big difference between hearing and listening.
So it's like a conversation, you know.
When you speak to someone, it's one on one, and that's exactly how I play.
나는 아무런 소리도 듣지 못하는 것 같지만, 무슨 뜻인지 이해하면 알아듣는다.
소리를 그냥 듣는 것과 이해하면서 듣는 것에는 큰 차이가 있다.
그래서 이해하면서 듣는 것은 마치 대화와도 같다.
누군가와 대화할 때는 1:1로 진행되는데, 그것이 바로 내가 플레이하는 방식이다.
12. The audience plays a huge part in how a piece will actually form.
They really allow the performers to walk a tightrope in a way that never seems to happen in the privacy of your own four walls.
I'm listening to the audience, and they're listening to me.
관객은 작품이 실제로 어떻게 형성될지에 큰 역할을 한다.
공연자들이 자기 자신을 둘러 친 사방(四方) 벽 내부의 사생활에서 결코 일어나지 않는 것처럼 보이는 방식으로 줄타기를 할 수 있게 해주는 존재가 바로 관객이다.
나는 관객들의 말을 촉각으로 듣고 있고, 관객도 내 말을 듣고 있다.
13. The thing about playing percussion is that you can create all these emotions that can be sometimes beautiful, sometimes really ugly, or sometimes sweet, sometimes as big as King Kong and so on.
And so there can be a real riot out there, or it can be so refined.
타악기 연주의 장점은 때로는 아름다울 수도 있고, 때로는 정말 추악할 수도 있으며, 때로는 달콤할 수도 있고, 때로는 킹콩만큼 큰 소리일 수도 있는 이러한 모든 감정을 만들어낼 수 있다는 것이다.
그래서 타악기 연주는 실제 폭동처럼 시끌벅적할 수도 있고, 아주 세련될 수도 있다.
