1. Humans are not the measure of all things.

2. If you look right, you can see the whole world from wherever you happen to be.

3. The revelation is this: don’t wait for some revelation. We make our own luck.

4. If wildlife cannot exist there will be poor quality for human life.

A better world for wildlife means a better world for human life.

5. If you’re overfishing at the top of the food chain, and acidifying the ocean at the bottom, you’re creating a squeeze that could conceivably collapse the whole system.

6. I am drawn to the wild not because it is wild but because it is sensible, logical, ordered, stable, resilient.

Wild nature is everything we’re struggling to regain.

7. The ocean is not just blank blue space but rather the habitat for amazing wildlife, and we have to take care how we use it.

If we want to keep having the goods and services it provides, we have to treat it more carefully in terms of fishing and dumping.

8. Species differ – but are often not very different.

Only humans have human minds.

But believing that only humans have minds is like believing that because only humans have human skeletons, only humans have skeletons.

9. Do other animals have human emotions? Yes, they do.

Do humans have animal emotions? Yes; they’re largely the same.

Fear, aggression, well-being, anxiety, and pleasure are the emotions of shared brain structures and shared chemistries, originated in shared ancestry.

10. Parental care, satisfaction, friendship, compassion, and grief didn’t just suddenly appear with the emergence of modern humans.

All began their journey in pre-human beings.

Our brain’s provenance is inseparable from other species’ brains in the long cauldron of living time.

And thus, so is our mind.

11. When my experiences with dogs and other animals – and people – were fewer, I used to think it silly for people to speak of dogs as “family” or other animals as “friends”.

Now I feel it’s silly not to.

I’d overestimated the loyalty and staying power of humans and underestimated the intelligence and sensitivity of other animals.

I think I understand both better.

Their gifts overlap, though they are different gifts.
